Contributing photographers - IMC photo library now online

mini mouse | 03.08.2005 10:16 | Technology

Thousands of pictures get published on indymedia sites worldwide, but when they drop off the newswire they generally can't be found again. To remedy this we've created a picture library where photographers can post pictures of lasting value, allowing them to be retrieved by keyword, subject, date or author.

Pictures downloaded by users of the library retain this information along with copyright details (by default a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License) and the contact details (if supplied) of the photographer.

The library can be found at  http://w3.buz.org/indypix

Great Resource!

Hey Mini ! This is a great resource!

Where can I send suggestions?

suggestion 1 - when the image is downloaded it is currently squished even though the full image is downloaded... how about making the image clickable so we could see the full see image easily!

more suggestions/requests and praise will follow, i'm sure...

You can contact through the e-mail link above (or here :-)

As for "squished"...

All the thumbnails expand into bigger versions if you click on them. When you have a full size version (still less than 500 pixels however) you can save it to the computer (drag to the desktop on a Mac, dunno about Windoze). Then you can open it in any image editor (or even just drag it into a Browser window) or Get Info in Photoshop will reveal the story behind the picture.

confussed and concerned

I followed the link to the site and read some text about the resource being a place for g8 pictures but when I did view all, all the photos were of recent non G8 related events.

So whats the score? What is this resource for and why is it needed as a seperate thing from indymedia itself?

The ability to upload photos and search for photos is already present in UK indy so I don't understand the reason for this new site. If it were a specific archive of G8 photos then that might make some sence (although again, MIR can already do it) but if people are going to upload any photo on loads of issues then it seems a little wierd.

"I followed the link to the site and read some text about the resource being a place for g8 pictures but when I did view all, all the photos were of recent non G8 related events".

Yup, re-reading the link it is misleading. What I meant was G8 was starting point, not an end in itself. I'll re-write it.

Not separate at all, I work with IMC London and consider it an IM resource.

"The ability to upload photos and search for photos is already present in UK indy so I don't understand the reason for this new site."

I'm not aware of this, or how it works. Nobody mentioned this facility to me whilst I was working on the picture library even though loads of people were aware of it. If this has been a waste of my time I'd be pretty pissed off.

Not at all. What's wrong with a picture library to which activists world wide subscribe? In France, want a picture relating to zapatistas? In Germany want a picture relating to Tibet? Picture libraries are set up all over just to service the marketing industry. What's wrong with one to service activism?
