This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- A report on the first 2 days of the 6-party talks on the Korean peninsula. More than a thousand protestors surrounded the main US base in Afghanistan, angry that the military was detaining villagers without consulting local authorities. There were large protests in London over the murder of an innocent Brazilian by plain clothes police in a subway.
From NETHERLANDS- Britain's "Shoot To Kill" policy is discussed by a member of the British Civil Rights Group, "Liberty."
From CUBA- An Italian appeals court ordered the arrest of 6 more CIA operatives in connection with the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric, taken to Egypt for torture. This US practice is referred to as "an extraordinary rendition."
From RUSSIA- US Defense Secretary Rumsfeld made it clear that the US does not plan to remove troops from bases in Central Asia, despite recent requests to do so by the Shanghai Organization for Cooperation- the SOC consists of Russia, China, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Kazakstan, and Uzbekistan. A Russian analyst questions the US policy toward Iranian nuclear development, pointing out the different reactions the US had toward nuclear weapons possessed by India, Pakistan and Israel. In the wake of the London bombings, US security measures have been stepped up- including bringing Israeli officers to the US to train US police in detecting suicide bombers and shooting suspects in the head to prevent triggering bombs they might be carrying.
