Actioncamp Somewhere in the Netherlands

actiegroep Woonstrijd! | 18.07.2005 11:48 | Social Struggles

From Wednesday 3 August until Wednesday 10 August a protest camp against the destruction of neighbourhoods and housing rights will take place Somewhere in the Netherlands. The aim of the camp is to encourage and increase activism on the topic of housing, from a new and innovative perspective. Actioncamp Somewhere will hopefully become a vibrant free place, from which to challenge the governments demolition trucks and the power of the big property owners.

The Camp is necessary because at the moment people are being played off against each other and forced to move. Students, the inhabitants of rented social housing and refugees are all threatened by the activities of dishonest landlords. There is almost no resistance against this and the little that exists is evicted. The fight for public space is in danger of being won by people who believe a mega-supermarket contributes to the social cohesion of a neighbourhood.

The aim of the camp is to encourage and increase activism on the topic of housing, from a new and innovative perspective. In addition to a wave of actions, there will be a number of workshops on the issues surrounding free public space and housing. Attention will also be paid to practical forms of political action, repairs, media and art. Actioncamp Somewhere will hopefully become a vibrant free place, from which to challenge the governments demolition trucks and the power of the big property owners.

Interested? Visit the website. In the run up to the Camp information regarding the location and the program will be made available. If you would like to organise a workshop on the theme of housing in the broadest possible sense or if you would like to help in any other way, please send us an email.

Actioncamp Somewhere is organised by actiegroep Woonstrijd! (lit: actiongroup housing struggle). The group is a platform that focuses on the problems created by government authorities, property developers and others, in the habitat of people. The group focuses on a use of space in general and of living space in particular, based on solidarity and a non-consumerist way of living and working.
