12th July 2005 Oaxaca

At 9 am a march called by different organisations departed from Avenue Juarez “El Llano”. The aim of the march was to give the farewell to the caravan that is heading towards Mexico City to demand freedom for political prisoners, respect for constitutional rights and guaranties, unity against PRI politics, against repression and for freedom of expression.

It was planned for the march to finish at the boulevard where a protest camp would have been set up, but due to the disproportionate police presence the march was force to stop at San Agustin Square where a meeting took place.

Once we gave the farewell to the caravan, the police threaten with evicting the place and very tense moments followed.

After a while negotiations started between the organisations involve with the march and the regional government Secretary, the atmosphere became a bit more relaxed. To date negotiations continue without any results.

About 1500 people attended the march, however, many of the buses that departed from the communities to participate in the events were held by the police and never reached the capital.

A massive mobilisation is planned for July 14th followed by a Human Rights Forum in Oaxaca on July 15th and a national forum for the defence of constitutional rights and guaranties with a permanent protest camp in Mexico City.
