Hiroshima-Nagasaki Fast

Katy Beinart | 13.07.2005 13:16 | Anti-militarism | Oxford

Be part of a national fast to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs.

I am coordinating the Hiroshima - Nagasaki Fast for Oxford, and I am writing to ask you if you would be interested in taking part. You can fast for between 1 and 3 days from the 6th August, you do not have to be in any particular place and can therefore participate in other events, although it is likely we will have some sort of ceremony at the beginning and end, and have a public presence for part of the time. This will more than likely tie in with other Hiroshima-Nagasaki events. The main idea is to get lots of people to do it to highlight the issues and get local and national press coverage. If you are interested, please contact me by e-mail. I will give you further info including some information on health issues around fasting.

In Peace,

Hiroshima to Nagasaki day fast

6th-9th August

Endorsed by Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Network for Peace and Trident Ploughshares

The idea is that a water only, public fast takes place in each county or region in England, Scotland and Wales. Press work will be done both locally and at a national level. Each fast will begin and end with a remembrance ceremony. What fasters do, how much time they spend in a public area, and other details are up to individual areas to decide.

The basic message is that:

Using nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was appalling, unacceptable, must be remembered and must never happen again.

The UK’s plans to work with the US to build a new generation of "small" nuclear weapons in order to be able to use them are unacceptable, a breach of the NPT, and must be stopped.

We therefore call on the government to

Stop breaching the NPT

Stop building the laser at Aldermaston

Terminate the Mutual Defence Agreement with the US

Get rid of Trident

Not to replace it with other nuclear weapons systems.
