Security alert in Birmingham city centre

20,000 people have been evacuated from Birmingham city centre after police warned of a possible security threat.
Police closed down the Birmingham Broad street entertainment zone and asked people to leave "as a precautionary measure".
It has been reported that police had also carried out a controlled explosions on a double decker bus, in response to a credible threat to public safety.
A spokesman said: We have officers down there and the operation is under way."
He said he could not confirm the nature of the intelligence received by the force but added: "Clearly it is being taken seriously.
"We have always said public safety is our absolute priority."
The force asked for bars, restaurants and clubs to be searched and for people entering the premises to be searched.
The police presence in the area was scaled up and no vehicles were allowed past the inner ring road into the city centre.
However, police are yet to confirm the nature of the threat.

Think it would be good for alternative media like Indymedia to have phone numbers for reports in events like this (for use by those affected in the area) where internet access may not be possible. Can the phone numbers listed (voice 07050 686 844 and Newswire gatesways : voice reports 0700 597 6164) be used for this or are they for G8 related info only? There doesn't appear to be any information on how these numbers are used.

Just another co-incidence like the olympic venue for 2012 being London just being announced the day before the bombs. The G8 and London's defenses out of town, out to lunch even!
Is it all to influence Joe Public so we all detract from our vow not to carry ID cards? Scaremongerers.
That would mean that, as half the world says the Americans bombed their own people, well if that is true then so did ours.
They will go on regardless, the developing of technology in the east will finish the ozone off, they are really bad these people with power to do what they like.
They will continue to decimate Africa, undermine it's markets, it's wildlife, it's education and it's dignity.
In case we object to what they do to OUR WORLD they say we have to carry ID cards.
When the Gulf Stream stops and it snows at the 2012 Olympics as the Thames freezes over due to a fast approaching Ice Age, they'll say it was our complacency, it was because You bought their electricity, petrol, products.

I'm sure Orwell knew a lot of things, another Mr Blair on the right track... It's interesting how all the Left focus upon 1984 and don't give a thought for Animal Farm and how it typifies the politics of some of the anti-war/liberation groups that run round as intent on controlling our thoughts as any Government.

As for these bad people using all the petrol and none renewable energy sources, destroying the ozone, unless you have a wind generator in your back garden, have you considered not using your power guzzling computer? Otherwise, get off your pedestal, and replace the patronising "You" with "us". Ta.

The London bombings were designed more to disrupt than to kill hundreds, the bomb on the bus was on the top deck, the Kings Cross one was the worst as it blocked the tunnel. I am so angry that anyone could do this but lets see the link to the website where they are supposed to have claimed responsibility. I think a few were sacrificed for the end result of fear among people.

Yes I meant "US" It was just a figure of speech. I have no way to escape the hydrolic despotism the same way as most of US, and I hate it. I want solar panels but can't afford them. I don't drive a car although I can, and I don't use my pottery kiln anymore. My garden is crammed with trees (on a council estate) and I have bluetits, wrens, thrushes frogs and lots of other friends taking up the free lodging.
If the Gulf Stream continues to be flooded with fresh water at the Northenmost point it's not going to make much difference to the talking in 2012. It's going to be too late if Bush does what he wants in the Eastern world, it may be too late already and they know this. ID cards are to keep us in place, as are many other devices.
