Stirling Court Update

transmitter | 07.07.2005 15:13 | G8 2005

An Indymedia court reporter called the IMC dispatch around lunchtime, Thursday 7 July. Here is a summary of his report from the Stirling court, as I understood it on the phone.

39 people were in court in Stirling, some others were moved to Falkirk. Altogether, at least 60 people were were in the courts of Stirling and Falkirk. Some of those who were supposed to be in court in Perth have been moved to Dundee.

Court interpreters for German, Dutch, Spanish, Hebrew, Portugese, Finnish and Norwegian are being brought in.

It wasn't clear what the charges were, but apparently mostly "breach of the peace".

The most common bail conditions are:

- Not to go to the districts of Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow, Perth and Kinross (spelling? near Gleneagles).
- Sign on every day at the local police station.
- Some are allowed to collect their belongings and go home
- ...and it is necessary to give a UK address, which makes it difficult for some of the international arrestees to get out on bail.

Some people who are not resident in the UK were remanded until tomorrow. This can make it difficult for people to catch their scheduled return flights/trains/busses.
We are not sure about the legal basis of the request for UK addresses. It may be based on the 1995 Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act.

The trials will take place in October, and there is an intermediate date in late September. This time schedule is normal for Scottish court cases, as apparently they have a shortage of sherifs (or judges, not sure i understood this).

2 dozen reporters are covering the events.
