You protestors need to get to an optician as severe myopia appears endemic. No-one seems to have seen this poor chap's car getting smashed, for example (and no, its not an unmarked police car).

A Scotsman

Is that a protestor or a Ned?

06.07.2005 12:59

If that is a protestor then its appalling, but just remember how much death and destruction those eight psychopaths are causing.

If that is a NEd then its just one more sickening symptom of the fucked-up capitalist experiment.

Why would a protestor do that?

06.07.2005 13:50

The photo of the person smashing the car up does surprise me.
I don't see why a protestor would do that, well, atleast a protestor who is actually there for the right reasons and actually believes in the whole reason that they are there...

Please leave!

06.07.2005 15:31

Living in Greenacre Place is a normally pleasent experiance with most of the reisdents made up of either elderly couples whose whaoe families have grown and moved on.

until this morning at 5:10 am, when I opened the blinds to discover a 'mob' of people dressed in black, many with their faces covered, or a form of head protection being worn. This is not a pleasant experiance. This group of youths appeared to be being marshalled by a older gent in a orange vest, with the call "Stay together, everyone stay together, it's safer!"

Peaceful protests don't take palce at 5:10am, and they have nothing to fear about being 'safer'!

I can assure everyone on this site that the individual seen smashing the car up was indentically dressed to the members of this mob!

Stirling welcomed protestors to the eco-village, but their trust has been as smashed as Burger King and PC World. Please leave NOW! You are no'longer welcome!

Same mentality slightly different uniform

06.07.2005 16:17

The black bloc wear only black and have their faces and heads covered. A bit like the riot police and the SAS. People attracted to these different groups are chips off the same block. If the local Scottish police were calling the shots, I think things would be different. Almost all of the protesters don't want to fight. Let's not stereotype and try to simplify a complex world.

oh what a shame

06.07.2005 16:41

oh no...they smashed up burgerking and PCworld...seriously mate you need to sort it out.

do some research on these companies to find out why they are targets, do make uneducated statements about something that you clearly do not understand.

smash cars (they pollute),as do pc world and a lot of others.

06.07.2005 18:42

Yes cars pollute as does PC World but PC World only pollutes in that it heats its own building! The companies which PC World supplies goods from are the main polluters where you should be directing your anger.

Question: Do you use electrical goods? Answer Probably yes! Hypocrite.

As for cars they are unfortunately the essential mode of transport for people today, and after all it is not actually the car that pollutes it is actually the internal combustion engine that drives the majority of vehicles on the road today

Question: Do you use vehicles with this transport. Answer: Probably Yes. Hypocrite.

As for Bannockburn, yes this is a quiet town and yes there are a number of elderly people, especially in the sheltered home near where the car was vandalised. Yes peacefully protest and make your point but due consideration must be given to the local people in the areas that you are protesting in. Question : Would you appreciate being rudely awakened at 5am in the morning in your property by senseless vandalism and wanton destruction Answer: Probably No!

Please show a little respect and consideration for the neighbourhoods that you are passing through, its all we ask!

people are very quick to point the finger of blame

06.07.2005 21:15

It seems that people are very quick to taint all the protestors with the same brush. Hvaing stayed at the hori - zone camp for four days and met many of the people there i can honestly say that i cannot imagine any of the people i met being involved in such senseless and violent actions. Dont be ignorant enought to let a few individuals who are intent on causing violence cause you to stereotype protestors. what possible gain could this of had? these are people who want to create a new world non violently. i study in stirling and i welcome the protestors they are fighting for a noble cause to make the world a better place.

In response to those residents of stirling who say that it is unacceptable to cause such riots in our streets. i in no way condone the action of protestors this morning but i ask you to remeber that these people feel passionatly about the issues and this has led them to become misguarded, the memebers of the G8 are guilty of warmongering, mass murder ,corruption of the climate, and who's 'free trade' are keeping millions of people in africa desperatly poor and whos ignorance to the aids epidemic in africa is sentencing a generation to death, if there ever was a reason to riot this would be it these people (the g8) need to e held accountable for their crimes. How many time have british people gone over to other countries and started riots and violence over such trivial things as a football match, people have been killed in sensless acts of violence because someones team lost the game, not so nice when its yuor doorstep tho?

Esoteric environmentalist

For those who are generalising the protestors...

06.07.2005 22:26

For those you are condemning all the protestors just because one or two idiots up there decided to smash stuff up, just think about this:

If every single protestor was out there to cause violence and smash things up, wouldn't all the protestors be doing just that?
The fact that it's only one or two doing this proves that these are only the acts of stupid individuals who either aren't considering the residents of the town, or simply just don't care.

Mi opinion

06.07.2005 22:47

Sorry but I think that if everybody makes this kind of acts that mean in someway distruction and that are a direct an clear way of protest that is the only one that mass media will ever show, becouse is what interests to the politicians in the G-8, Becouse when more and more people starts to fight and show how much they care all that globalization means by doing this kind of 'violente acts' the places where this G8 meetings are done will be reduced and these persons that try to make us life under their wills will feel less self-secure and feel pressed by the situation and the people which will help the change.

Minority spoilers

07.07.2005 07:28

As usual it is a minority who spoil it for the majority of people, but I would like to point out that I specifically mentioned that there were between 150 and 200 peolpe yesterday morning!

A little bit of advice which has proved very successful in Holland, Dutch international football fans police themselves, they point out those intent on causing trouble and ostracise them. Before this all fans were treated in the same manner.

If the members of the eco-camp at Forthbank, followed this philosopy then they would not at present be surrounded by police and contained many for no reason, but they would be free to carry-out their peaceful protest.

Nimby syndrom

07.07.2005 13:22

Do you know the NIMBY (not in my back yard) syndrom ?
All those protest by "residents", "true scots", telling us to leave from your small piece of hill, while you didn't protest for all those exploiters of the poverty (material and spiritual) in the world...
THEY destroy much more than some windows and few material goods... THEY KILL by protecting their agriculture by subventions, preventing poor countries to export their unic own productions, they protect medics with licenses preventing the use of generics...BUT THEY DON'T DO IT IN YOUR TOWN, so that's OK, you don't protest, it is far away, far from your sight and your medias don't tell you each night while you eat your sterilised pre-cooked dinner on your sofa, face to the TV....
I'm sad about those reactions...

inconsistencies around the bannockburn/greenacre actions

07.07.2005 14:42

I am working as a freelance photographer for an international news agency, and as such I have seen
and photographed my fair share of riots. As such, I see are a few weird inconsistencies about the
events relayed by the BBC - and few others - around Bannockburn:

1.
I did not find any reports online about this event except by the BBC. This kind of action usually
makes for sensational news, it will be in many papers and webpages. If you score a good shot of so
mething like this, it will earn you quite some bread. Yet, it seems to be not very widespread news
despite the clearly sensational content.

2.
The way those people attack the police van is haphazard to say the least. Having witnessed many si
milar attacks on police vehicles, I can testify that people will usually target vulnerable parts o
f the vehicle like head- and rearlights, rearview mirrors and such.
On the BBC footage one can see a person banging morosely against metal grills protecting the vehic
le, which will not be damaged by such action, they are designed to repel just that sort of attack.
Another one is just kicking the bumper. All of them slowly walk around the police van while it is
just standing there.

3.
The direct action concept behind the so-called black-block is actually not wanton destruction in a
confused and aimless way. Those people tend to attack specific locations
or targets, cause as much damage as they possibly can in as little time as it takes and then are o
ut of there in no time. Personally I can vouch for this because I know how hard it is for a photog
rapher to get an action shot (which, as mentioned, sells) because they are gone so quickly. Usuall
y you only get to take pictures of the results. The PCWorld and BurgerKing trashing look like the
real McCoy. People walking slowly around a police-van which does not even respond much to being at
tacked, and battering it at their leisure does not.

4.
The kind of people who go to this black-block actions have a very high sense of pride. They are si
milar to terrorist groups in the way that they usually claim the action as theirs. Even if they do
n't, they will usually pop up in discussions like the one above and try to justify the righteousne
ss of their actions. Nothing like that has happened here.

5.
No evidence of police counteraction is seen on the BBC footage. Standard respose of police
when being attacked is to form and enforce a defense perimeter. Alternatively, they will advance t
o gain ground and disperse opponents. Examples of this can be seen on videos and pictures of many
engagements taking place during the past few days. But not in this particular one.

I am not trying to insinuate anyything. I just say what an impartial outside observer sees, who a
ctually cares for neither side very much, but still has quite some experience in this field.

Freelance photographer. Are you really?

Should you really be telling the truth would you mind putting up and information or websites which you may have or may be on?

Or are you just one of these apologists for the mindless idiots?

Sustainable Living?

10.07.2005 21:54

Just got back into Stirling to see the wrecked Burger King, etc, the line of the march obvious from the trail of plastic bottles and other junk along the way, and the "Eco Village" mostly deserted, but still covered in all the debris you'd expect from say, T in The Park before the clean-up crew gets there.

I naively thought that the "Eco-villagers" - who were invited to use the Forthbank area freely - were going to demonstrate sustainable and environmentally-friendly living to us....

So, anyone else fancy a peaceful protest blocking the exit from the Eco Village until the stragglers clear up their - non-biodegrable - crap....?

ANOther Stirling Resident

When did this happen?

12.07.2005 18:34

I was on the 3am blockades. I didn't realise til I was out there how much of it was Black Bloc, and yes, the burger King was badly smashed up and there's no excuse for it. The stones thrown at police were done more from fear, as far as I could tell, one of the only ways available spur of the moment to hold back cops with big sticks.
The main positive thing I did have to say about the black bloc after the demo was how well behaved they were once off the industrial estate. Everyone waved and gave a polite greeting to any residents they saw watching, though I do understand it was still probably frightening. We didn't choose to go into the housing estate deliberately, there were police at both ends of the road and the only only path off happened to lead in there.
The only damage I saw done, and by now there were so few people left you could easily see all of them, was one wheelie bin was taken to make a blockade, and one paving stone smashed. Those who did the the damage were quickly rounded on by others and made to stop.
I didn't see any damage being done to private property. If it was the protesters, than I do not defend them. However, I just felt the need to point out if it did happen, it doesn't seem to have happened during the blockades. I might be wrong, I admit it is impossible for me to be 100% sure, but it does go against everything I saw out there.

G8

11.10.2005 10:39

The G8 wasn't our choice of town, if it was up to us we'd protest in the middle of some field. but that would get us no publicity. anyway, we didn't choose the town, people like George Bush and Tony Blair did. i told a guy this when he spat out his dummy at us, of course after we pressed him it turned out he was a babylonian (lol), so we left him to his consumation of british resources.
