WDM mocks Blair in G8 run-up

To symbolise existing injustices, a grinning Blair fed crumbs from the rich nations' table while Bush on stilts whipped the developing nations in the run-up to the G8 meeting at Gleneagles July 2005.

Brighton & Hove WDM began the G8 week of action in Edinburgh by posing as Blair and Bush, feeding crumbs to figures dressed in white, dragged down by the balls and chains of poverty, debt, aids and neoliberalism.

We were a group of 15 local activists who participated in the Make Poverty History march and the Corporate Dream Global Nightmare counter conference as part of the G8 Alternatives events on 2-3 July.

We will repeat the stunt at the blockade of the Gleneagles Golf Course on Wednesday 6th July.

We were very encouraged by the huge numbers attending the rallies but outraged by the dilution of our message by the Live8 coverage, the takeover of our demands by the BlairBrown machine and the overbearing police presence.

We need debt relief WITHOUT conditions, aid from NEW money and a COMPLETE overhaul of international trade rules.
