Main kettle site, Canning st.

04.07.2005 13:31

As of 1:30 about 200 people are penned in by police in Canning St, round the back of Exchange Square, to the West of Princes St. People stopped moving for about half an hour and this allowed police to bring up dozens of vans either end of this short back-street and pen them in. text book maneouvre, with a tight line of police -- possibly TSG -- in front of the protestors, with vans and other police behind this. Dogs and horses were also around. Unlikely that this group of people (which did not seem to include the clowns) will be gong anywhere.

Previously saw unsuccessfuly attempts by police to snatch black-clad and masked protestors on Morrisson Rd.

Update

04.07.2005 15:23

As of 16:00hrs, the whole of Princes street is still closed to traffic. Almost all shops are closed, with some boarded up. People walk freely up and down it on the western half. A street party with samba band is happening at the corner of Hanover street. It is penned in on 3 sides by police vans. There is a significant police presence, but only a few riot cops guard the art gallery (they won't let people pass over to the east of Princes street). It is still possible to leave south via The Mound (up the hill). Riot cops are also dotted around the back of the Princes street gardens.

There are unconfirmed reports of fascists following some anti-fascist activists around the city centre.

Police moved in on Canning Street demo

04.07.2005 16:02

At 4pm Police suddenly moved in on the Canning St demo. fully padded, armed with riot shields, CS gas/pepper spray canisters, split the crowd in two. Pink/samba bloc mostly at West End, others towards the East. Arrested several people, including a street medic. Picking people out of the crowd that are fingered by Police Evidence gatherers with the orange tags, searching them, asking for ID. Police also searched the bushes near the offices, found a 'bobbies' Police Helmet. People are being questioned and then released individually very slowly. Atmosphere was tense.

Police tactics were very deliberate all day - they let the energy of the crowd go down, loads of people left through a gap (where they were filmed, searched, etc) in the Police line much earlier in the afternoon, people became tired & hungry. After all their energy & potential resistance was sapped, they then moved in with new reinforcements to arrest and question people... very frustrating day.

Locals attacking cops near Princes Mall

04.07.2005 21:31

Around an hour ago (9:30), roughly a dozen riot police were left isolated down a laneway, on the north side of Princes Street near the Waverley Bridge junction. Angry locals (-definitely- not activists!) attacked them with bottles and stones, pushing a dumpster into the line and throwing traffic cones and a bin in front of them to loud cheers. Police held their line and charged back, visibly shaken. Reinforcements arrived en masse within a minute including the canine unit. Police then withdrew entirely within 15 minutes.

Pictures up soon when I get the camera going...
