Dover's Multicultural Festival Success

An eye witness's account of a splendid afternoon of solidarity with refugees.

From 2pm onwards, Dover's Multicultural Festival took place in Pencester Gardens, following a procession of adults and kids from the seafront. It was opened by old New Labour socialist MP for Dover Gwyn Prosser, and the Right Worshipful Mayor of this borough Ken Tranter - a fine true socialist of the old school and all round good egg. They both gave thankfully short speeches then the afternoon kicked off. Surprise surprise, Make Poverty History was the recurrent theme.

There were loads of stalls: Kent Refugee Action Network had one jam packed with goodies; art and photography; Salvation Army; Christian Aid; Kent Connexions advisory service for de yoof; Kent Youth run by Kent Cunty Council etc. Also mobile catering facilities churning out stuff all hot all hot. No curry this year sadly.

The African drumming and face painting workshops for the kids were great. I looked in the mirror when I came back and thought I was Sidney Poitier!

Loads of fun for all the family. Bands performing, youth dancing, me sweating. All in all a jolly good afternoon's entertainment. Inclusive, open, welcoming and warm hearted. It didn't piss down either, in spite of the clouds.

I hope this annual event will continue to be the highlight of Dover's summer events programme. Can we have one every week please?
