The Centre in Context

Jack Kane Community Education Centre is situated in Craigmillar on the south east side of the city. It is a large building comprising a sports hall, open plan coffee bar area, general purpose meeting rooms, changing rooms and offices. The building is situated some way from the main road and is surrounded by extensive grounds which include football pitches and a play area. The main entrance is located at the back of the building. The building was opened in the early 1970s and is attached to a sports centre, which is managed by Edinburgh Leisure. Although they share a kitchen area, the buildings have separate entrances and operate as separate entities.

The staffing complement comprises a Community Education Worker, a full time service support worker and clerical assistant. Part-time youth workers support the youth and children's clubs. The Centre has a locally elected management committee, which meets on a four to six weekly basis and makes decisions about the running of the centre in conjunction with the staff.
