Days of Dissent! Edinburgh Convergence 2005
Turning Ideas into Action
From Thursday, 30th June – Thursday 7th July, “Days of Dissent! Edinburgh Convergence 2005 - Turning Ideas into Action” will take place in the Teviot Building, Edinburgh University Student Union, Bristo Square, Edinburgh.
The week long event will provide a forum to debate and discuss the issues behind the 2005 G8 Summit; the ideas, perspectives, motivations, histories and future(s) of the global “movement of movements” currently converging in Edinburgh and the possible new worlds that these movements are attempting to build in the here and now.
A myriad of meetings and seminars on pressing political issues relating to the G8 will take place alongside practical workshops offering skills, for example, how to make your own radio programme or knowing your rights if arrested. The event will include a radical film festival and exhibitions, such as “Art Not Oil” and a photo installation by the Make Borders History Network.
A Convergence Meeting will be convened daily to discuss matters arising throughout the day and to decide on action to be taken.
Roz Corbett from Edinburgh People and Planet said: “One common criticism of made of radical movements is that they’re clear in what they’re against but don’t have any alternatives to offer. This event will show the rich diversity of the movements involved in resisting the Summit, some of their visions of different ways in which the world could be organised and how they’re already living to achieve it.”
Paul Richards from The Common Place, a social centre in Leeds and part of the Dissent! Network, explained: “We hope that the discussions that take place here will not only inform the actions that people take against the Summit, but also contribute to the way in which the movement gathered here in Edinburgh continues to develop.”
