Spyware from IM site

Would anybody at IM like to comment on the fact that the site loads the Back Web spyware programme onto any machine that posts to the site ?

Why is this, what details are you collecting ?

Spyware is designed to put you off its trail when it is installed. Indymedia is not installing it. You have likely got something called a 'Downloader.Trojan' virus which is downloading the spyware seperately.

Indymedia do not install spyware and if you find it is happening, check a different computer.

The above is still true but as I am posting from a linux machine it doesn't appear to be trying to install anything.

The server might have been hacked (highly unlikely - as I would be getting some sort of download message as I type...)

Check your computer for viruses in safe mode - in normal mode the virus could be disabling anti-virus protection.

I have used indymedia for a long time now and have never had such problems.

I also work fixing peoples computers which have become infested with viruses and spyware. The description above regarding spyware being dropped onto the computer is classic of a virus. I have seen it many many times.

If you still fear this, then download a live boot linux OS such as knoppix or damn small linux and go to the site from that - spyware doesn't work in linux, neither do viruses (well not entirely true, but still).
