An anti-Syrian politician was killed on Tuesday when a bomb ripped through his car in Beirut, witnesses and security sources said.

They said George Hawi, former leader of the Lebanese Communist Party, died instantly in the blast in the Wata Musaitbi neighborhood of Beirut.

It was the second killing of an anti-Syrian figure in Beirut this month. Newspaper columnist Samir Kassir was killed on June 2 when a similar explosion destroyed his car.

Hawi's killing came two days after the end of Lebanon's parliamentary elections which were won by an Ex-pro-Syrian alliance led by Saad al-Hariri, son of a slain former prime minister.

George Hawi killed by Jews in blood libel

22.06.2005 10:24

George Hawi has been killed by Jews.

Although we have no evidence of this we are certain that Mossad was behind the hit which will have been sanctioned by Arik Sharon.

The reason will have been that Hawi was anti Syrian and because he had been praised by Washington in the past. This will have upset the Jewish Lobby in Washington who will have called for a blood sacrifice.

Of course Israel and Syria have a secret pact as it is to their mutual benefit that progressive Lebanese leaders and politicians are killed. The Syrians want to obtain power and the Israelis were spawned by the devil and can only do evil, as demonstrated by their refusal to lie down and be trampled all over, their sickening ability to have survived and above all the murder of Christ.

Will that do you FTP you sick twisted vile racist Jew hating facist scum?

Don't feed the Trolls

I am sorry if you were offended. IM does suffer from anti semites like ftp but please do not think they represent the broader viewpoint.

I am surprised the comment wasn't pulled earlier but perhaps there are techncial probs.

Thanks IM regular

Thanks for that comment.

IM is a site where it is helpful to hear what the alternative view is. I have always been to the left of centre and with regards Israel I believe that criticism is good and healthy of any democracy, and criticism of Israel is not anti semitic unless judged by different standards to other countries; but people such as FTP often cross the blurred line into the plainly anti semitic realm.

Outraged Bush Administration Links Hawi's Murder to Syria........

22.06.2005 22:14

The United States has angrily linked Syria's "long and continued presence" in Lebanon to George Hawi's assassination and demanded a formal investigation into his death.
Hawi's death in a Beirut bomb blast followed the slayings of former premier Rafik Hariri in February and of An Nahar's anti-Syrian journalist Samir Kassir early this month.

"These are not random killings, these are targeted assassination of political figures," charged White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

"It is clearly an attempt to intimidate the people of Lebanon and to undermine progress toward a free and democratic future."

While he did not explicitly blame Syria, McClellan said that "Syria's long and continued presence inside Lebanon has created an environment of intimidation and political repression" and must end immediately.

He said Damascus must comply with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559, stressing: "That means getting all their intelligence operatives out of Lebanon. The international community is not going to look the other way."

Britain's Foreign Office also asked Lebanese authorities Tuesday to "mount full, thorough, and transparent investigations" to bring Hawi's killers to justice.

"We urge the Lebanese authorities to mount full, thorough, and transparent investigations to bring those responsible to justice," it said.

"The British Government condemns the murder of George Hawi, and that of the journalist Samir Kassir on 2 June," said the Foreign Office's junior minister Kim Howells in a statement.

Thousands attend funeral of assassinated Lebanese politician

24.06.2005 19:12

Thousands of people attended on Friday the funeral procession of former Lebanese Communist Party chief George Hawi who was assassinated in a Beirut car bomb attack.

Throngs of people were carrying Lebanese flags and Communist Party flags bearing the hammer and sickle. Red-coloured banners read: “Assassinated in the name of democracy.”

Four priests led the masses as the procession moved through the streets of the capital to a Greek Orthodox church in the city centre.

Among the congregation in church were deputies, communist activists and sympathisers paying homage to the anti-Syrian opposition leader who was murdered on Tuesday.

Newly elected MPs Saad Hariri, the son of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri who was slain in a February bomb attack, and Druze leader Walid Jumblatt sat at the front pew of the church.

Hawi's assassination came less than three weeks after a car bomb killed anti-Syrian journalist Samir Kassir in Beirut.
