Thursday of the G8 Justice Ministers meeting in Sheffield saw two main protest actions. Firstly, there was the 'Make Poverty History' rice dinner on Devonshire Green, which became a forum for music, speakers and political discussion. Large crowds gathered as the dinner rounded up attention for the white band cause. The second action was a protest along a major road leading towards the city centre, West street. Protesters moved along the road in a peaceful manner until stopped by police lines. The protest was then penned in and a strong sense of comraderie created with chants of 'Whose streets? OUR STREETS' and the beats of a samba band. Some protesters were arrested from within the pen and also some people with nothing to do with the protest at all. Large numbers of police surrounded the protest(300 in a rough estimate), armed with horses, dogs and many sources of surveilance.
