Heavy fighting and imprisonments after Amsterdam squat evictions

Anarchist Black Cross (ABC) Brighton | 16.06.2005 20:51 | Free Spaces | Repression | Social Struggles

On May 31 over ten squats were being evicted in Amsterdam by a big army of riot police during the so-called eviction wave which happens every three months.

Lately these evictions had gone by without serious resistance. But due to ongoing evictions for gentrification or even no reasons at all, the local squatting movement decided to face the authorities and resist strongly. From six in the morning burning barricades were erected in front of the Punk Rockinn squat which was located in the city centre. As soon as the SWAT team showed up in their armoured vans they were being attacked with stones and had to leave. The same happened to the riot cops that were called in to clear the streets. A situation unusual to recent evictions was created with stones and paint bombs flying through the air. The squatters eventually tried to retreat on one end of the street and find safe homes on their way. Unfortunately several didn't make it as far and got caught by the cops. One person was arrested while holding a molotov. During the rest of the day people who were being identified as squatters got picked up from the streets, probably being recognised from the earlier confrontations. Also the people inside the Punk Rockinn squat were arrested after delaying the eviction for five hours with courageous resistance and smart barricading. The riot police that wanted to evict other squats in the city were met with lots of resistance to their display of power. It was clear that they were overwhelmed by the amount of resistance this day. In the end 25 people ended up in jail.Right now 8 are still being kept
imprisoned. This week their pre-court detention was prolonged by another 30 days. This means they're being held until their courtcase on July 14.

We're calling for expressions of solidarity with these people that were fighting for the right to housing and autonomous social spaces.

You can send e-mails to:  solidarity@squat.net which will be printed and sent to the prisoners.

Some people are still rejecting to tell who they are. You can send them letters at the following addresses:

Unfortunately we can't publish the names of the others because we don't have permission for this.

Hope you can make their stay in prison a bit better. As we say in Holland: You can't evict ideas. We'll keep on squatting!
