Sheffield Wakes Up To Banners and Samba

Helen | 15.06.2005 09:55 | Globalisation | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield

At 7am this morning banners were dropped from bridges on Park Square roundabout, Castle Market and along the Parkway reminding commuters that the G8 Ministers were in town over the next three days.

Sheffield's Rhythms of Resistance made their way onto the centre of the Park Square roundabout under the bright pink banner "Stop G8 Taking Liberties in Sheffield" and played to the passing traffic. People passed out leaflets about the G8's erosion of civil liberties to the traffic stopped at the traffic lights. One person managed to get on the 287 bus to Bawtry to hand out leaflets and luckily managed to get back off before the bus was on its way!

Other banners included "Exploiters of the World Disunite", "Make Borders History" and "Shut the G8". A lot of cars tooted their horns in support

The text of the leaflet was

"Please take care today...

We thought you would like to know that meeting in secret in Sheffield today are representatives of eight powerful countries who are plotting to reduce your liberties by...

- forcing you to carry identity cards
- making it easier for the government to keep information on you
- playing on your fear of outsiders and people with different beliefs, appearance or cultures

So please be careful out there..."

The police presence was small, mainly three photographers. After about an hour everyone sauntered away leaving police reinforcements to behave strangely, rooting around in the bushes on Park Square roundabout!
