Police sacked over party beating

Two off-duty North Wales Police officers who beat up a partygoer so badly other guests thought he was dead have been sacked.

Sgt Stephen Tierney and Pc Jonathan Tym, each with nearly 30 years' experience, were told to resign.

The disciplinary hearing followed a 180-hour community punishment last month for assaulting Michael Mayers.

The officers, from Wrexham, are to appeal against conviction and sentence.

They are also considering whether to appeal against the disciplinary hearing decision.

Their wives have also submitted a dossier of complaints to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, calling for an inquiry by an outside force into how the case was investigated.

During Wednesday's hearing, the pair were represented by an official from the Police Federation when they appeared before Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale and two superintendents at police headquarters in Colwyn Bay.

Inspector Mark Judson, who represented the men on behalf of the federation, said: "Basically both officers have been required to resign from the force as from midnight tonight.

"They still have an appeal which they have submitted to the Court of Appeal in London, against conviction and sentence. They will also consider appealing today's decision," he added.

The assault on Mr Mayers happened at a Chester hotel in December 2003.

They were convicted of assault in April and sentenced at Warrington Crown Court for the attack on Mr Mayers, from Connahs Quay, at the Mollington Banastre Hotel.

During the court hearing, the judge was told how the two officers, each with nearly 30 years' experience, had been at a party with their wives and friends when they were involved in a dispute with Mr Mayers.

The dispute escalated into a scuffle in which Mr Mayers lost consciousness and was dragged round by his tie.

The sentencing hearing was told Mr Mayers looked so bad after the assault that fellow guests thought he was dead.

Each was also ordered to pay £1,200 costs..

Following the misconduct hearing on Wednesday, a spokesman for North Wales Police said: "Following a disciplinary hearing today both Pc Tym and Sgt Tierney were required to resign forthwith."
