G8 Protest - money to be made
lan in Manchester | 04.06.2005 16:11
We see the "organised" protest industry begining to crank up as the G8 gets ever closer. Train trips being offered, room space being made available and "facilites" being offered. Who is doing this, you, me - No. The Protest Industry has come to town, London wide boys with an eye to the main chance are making money are providing the government with the cloak of legitamcy for their leadership.
Is anyone going to get close the G8 leaders - No of course not. Is the conference going to be stopped or delayed - not in a million years. Will som people make a nice little profit - you bet !

Poverty , climate change, and the corporate cancer eating this planet is bringing a lot of different people together. Are you suggesting all of these people are "wide boys" from London out for money and power, ( perhaps flogging dodgy riot porn videos and pamphlets from the back of a van behind the golf course to make milllions, yeh right mate.. ).
Yep, there does seem to be a poverty industry as you may call it ( e.g. Homelessness in this country but I'm not covering that here ) there have been people who have made capital out of protest, e.g books etc. but money does get channelled back into funding stuff like protests, actions, water projects as an example, raisng awareness ( tho' as an African lady pointed out to a BBC journo recently who needs pointing out that there is poverty in Africa. etc.). It varies, and there are overpaid charity/quango/NGO workers around ( some quite colonialist in attitude ) but that is not all of them and to tar every charity and protestor with the brush of being some money making scheme is out of order.
Re the trains - whether you or I think it is a good idea, Fair play to the people who have gone to the effort of trying to put them on. Hiring trains is not exactly a money spinner now is it?! They are not making money and they are not being paid for their time and effort. Also, they are not dictating how or if even of you should go to Scotland for the G8 - that is up to you. Myself, I am hitching as that is what I choose to do.
No re. large scale organising - it is up to you to think and act for yourself in deciding what you would like to do re the G8 Summit.
Myself I don't agree with some of the ideas put forward by some of the large scale reformist NGOs and political parties but I don't disagree about them protesting or their right to protest against the G8. ( I do object to some parties/NGOs trying to 'hijack' protests for politcal capital as has happened in the past, drowning out other voices of dissent ( hello SWP!dont bother replying to me )but fuck em - we can do our own thing.
Anyway the choice is up to you on how to be effective the best way you can:- Whether to go up to Scotland with a group, affinity group, solo, not go, by parachute with a bomb, visit a corporation/arms dealer/bailiffs, do sabotage, subvertise, or similar positive actions like the anarchists who fixed up peoples places in Georgia during the Seal Island G8 etc.do something else as an ongoing local project e.g. informing your neighbours, help organise community debates, etc. relating privatisation eg. GPs, hospitals, with the G8, IMF,WTO corporate neoliberal lobby / agendas in a way that makes connections here against mainstream media bullshit. Just an idea. For instance, me and few friends are making some leaflets about this that I hope will get through to people who haven't made he connections between corporate lobbies, global markets, the G8 privatisation/ theft/ commodification of healthcare ,poverty, community breakdowns etc.
Yes the Beyond Activism is still alive and kicking ( large scale actions, day to day living, strange binary oppositions and debates on inclusivity ) along with the local/European/Global organising debate and I think it should always be in mind when deciding on a course of action that you think is the right thing to do. Stickers, flyers and posters are not always as good as face to face communication and debates and positive actions and meeting different people. ( see the wonderful 500th issue of Schnews ).
Oh, and finally, the room space being made available. How bloody devious of these people!. whatever next - perhaps they have bought up all the portaloos in the UK and plan to hire them up per shit during the G8 thus becoming porataloo millionaires.
Perhaps you are frustrated like many of us are in this time of seemingly pointless marches and corporate/state repression ( including frustration about different ways of doing things, and the efficacy of our actions ) . None of us see eye to eye all the time - we are not robots.. You can change your mind and tactics at any time. You don't have to do 'group meetings' or 'workshops' ( unless you're in light engineering A.S.) or become a mass publisher.
See you in Edinburgh - or perhaps I just may go down the 'orrible Square Mile instead, or just carry on doing what I am doing ( but I ain't gonna tell u wot ).
PS to the other commentator, I'm not middle class, I think Bono's a knobhead ( no reply please - my opinion ) and I'm not part of any imagined "G8 industry" - I hope you are doing summat constructive.
Go fuck shit up.

I'm fucked if I'm going to give my money and time to a bunch of London boys all making a nice little earner out of you. Change will come in this country through involvement of the people in the political process not by standing on a Scottish street wearing stupid clothes and holding a banner.
Where I live we have worked hard to get Councillers into power and we are seeing the result, we are improving the lives of people in our area, those going to Scotland are just wasting their time.
