Bob the martyr

I thought for myself - it wasn't painful!! | 04.06.2005 15:27 | G8 2005 | Globalisation | Repression | Social Struggles

Does Geldof want to make poverty History or,
Does Geldof want to make poverty His story?

I just noticed that Sir Bob has, by coincidence I’m sure, published a book. ‘Geldof in Africa’.

I examined it, not to browse in consideration of purchase, but to look for the bit that says xx% of the proceeds of this book will go to help the make poverty history, but alas it made no such promise.

So what has Geldof actually DONE?

We have one example of how he had perpetuated the poor working conditions of people in China by having those wristbands made in a Chinese sweatshop.

Now another example of how he has used the plight to apparently feather his own nest.

So question,

Does Geldof want to make poverty History or,
Does Geldof want to make poverty His story?

I thought for myself - it wasn't painful!!

What have you done for world poverty ?

Posting to IM slagging off Bob Geldof doesn't sound like much of a contribution. Is it because Bob gets things done, feeds people, rebuilds communities, educates politicians and makes a difference while you sit and take shots at him with your keyboard ?

Charity should be banned

Bob feeds no one , only his own guilt.
Red nose day , Live Aid are days when muilti-millionaires and so called celebs try to make ordinary working people cough up money in a pointless exercise of sickly charity.
They turn on the crocodile tears and we fall for it every time sending them money via our treasured pieces of rip off plastic.
Bob educates nobody by doing this.
What he really should be doing is telling our filthy rich government and corporate lackey's to stop ripping off these poorer nations by fixing the "free" market, and global economy,
Do not give to charity and maybe then we will see the error(horror) of our ways.
Another World is Possible.
Yet these overpaid bored and guilty celebs are frightened to death of the real solution , as it would really turn their pathetic little lives upside down.
Most charity money is given by the poorest in society, the rich must be laughing their bollocks off aswell as passing the blame and guilt onto us.
Dont fall for it and then we'll see the guilty ones plain as day.

DESPER 8

Sir Bob Geldof of Africa is good for publicising flagging, middle-aged, has-been pop stars, like Sir Sting of the Rainforest, Sir Elton John of L.A., who spends more on flowers than LIVE 8 will raise and Sir Paul McCartney of Kintyre, remember him? When did he last have a #1 chart-topping record? If Beenie Man, Bujo Banton or Elephant Man were in the entertainment line-up and Sir Bono of the Boyne wasn't, I might be interested.

And me

Funny, I thought that is was people that got things done, fed people, rebuilt communities, educated politicians and made a difference.

Sheep rely on others to lead them, wear a plastic bracelet, come to a pop concert, use my first name (tony or bob), vote every 4 years.

Let me see, shall I go to a pop concert (no effort required) or resist G8 (time, expense, commitment, risk)……. Emmm..

What do you think using sweat shops does to make poverty history? Living in poverty is unacceptable – Working in a sweatshop is ok?

If you were selling a book about Africa for your own financial gain when would you sell it, Round about now? Riding on the backs of people living in poverty to obtain as much market penetration as possible.

What have I done for world poverty, what do I claim to do?

Well, my starting point is ensuring I don’t perpetuate it by supporting organisations that do so. By opposing organisations that will ‘write off’ debt providing those countries adopt ‘western’ attitudes, and hence become a new market.

The western world has shafted Africa since before colonial times by oppression, violence, tariff and unfair trade.

Maybe a pop concert will put this to rights? If not, surely a bracelet will?

Perhaps I should have bought a bracelet and become an Armchair Activist?

All them wasted years!

One problem for another

Shaka Zulu says: "If Beenie Man, Bujo Banton or Elephant Man were in the entertainment line-up and Sir Bono of the Boyne wasn't, I might be interested."

Must we really have people who promote violence against gays and women champion other human rights causes?

unclear?

In case this was previously unclear to some of you, Live8 will not be collecting money. I know someone mentioned the idea that Elton John has put more money into flowers than Live8 will collect this weekend, but perhaps you missed the point. The concerts are free. No one is collecting money for Live8. Now, I totally agree that the majority of celebrities involved are just jumping on the bandwagon, but it's not a bad bandwagon to jump on to. At least they're getting off their asses for something. If you've got a problem with the bracelets, then don't wear one, no one is holding you down to staple one to your wrist and certainly no one is forcing you to buy the book that has 0.0% donations going to African poverty. So if you feel that Live8 is a pointless cause, then fine, don't participate, but get the facts straight.
