Refugee Week

Paul | 04.06.2005 13:41 | Oxford

With the stigmatisation of refugees and asylum seekers since 9/11 it is important to support this and inform the public of what life is really like for refugees when they are not living in castles supplied by the state.

Dear Friends of Asylum Welcome,

To celebrate Refugee Week (June 20 - 26) this year, Asylum Welcome is planning a variety of activities.

Our key activities include a Public Meeting at the Oxford Town Hall, St. Aldates on Monday, June 20th from 12:30 to 2 pm. Jon Snow, Chancellor of Brookes University, will be our guest speaker and there will be a panel for discussion at the end of the talk.

At the Public Meeting we will also launch the book: The Story of My Life: Refugees Writing in Oxford which came about as the result of a creative writing project given at Asylum Welcome for refugees and asylum seekers from several countries in 2004, by Carole Angier who also edited the book. Signed copies will be available at the Town Hall Meeting at the special Refugee Week price of £5.00 (regular price £7.50). You can also order it by contacting us at  office@asylum-welcome.supanet.com.

Attached is a flyer publicising the event. We would appreciate it if you would pass the information on to your colleagues and/or post it on your office bulletin board.

We hope you can attend. It should be an interesting meeting. See you there?
