WHO ARE THEY?
The G8 is an unaccountable, self-appointed club of the world’s most powerful leaders. They meet once a year to formalise their strategy to further manipulate the global economy for the benefit of a privileged few to the detriment of everyone else.

The G8’s combined power means they effectively control all the other main world organisations. These include the World Trade Organisation (WTO), World Bank and IMF, NATO and European Union (EU).

These and other groups meet behind closed doors and exclusion zones to avoid public scrutiny and accountability. They make decisions that are destroying peoples lives in the interests of their private profit This year the G8 summit will be held at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland on the 6th-8th July. WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
The G8 is a meeting where the leaders of eight countries get together to discuss ‘world issues’. This year the focus will be on Africa and Climate Change. The slick presentation of the G8 to the public, via a largely subservient mainstream media, is a PR propaganda exercise aiming to whitewash the real reasons for world hunger and greenwash the almost irreversible destruction of the environment.

For example, the starvation and poverty in much of Africa is usually portrayed as an unfortunate accident of climate and geography. However, in reality, it is largely the result of the damaging policies imposed by the banks, big- business corporations and governments under the G8.

Debt is a weapon of control, via ‘structural adjustments’, ‘austerity measures’ and debt – equity swaps (neo-colonialism). While Aid is, for many, a bit like offering someone a tiny glass of water after you have just drained their village well.

Britain is leading the drive for Aid money to be used for privatisation of public assets in poor countries via the UK Department For International Development (DFID). The total amount of finance and resources that is received by the rich countries from the poor countries always far exceeds what is given back as ‘Aid’ and Debt-relief.

Is it enough to offer a few crumbs off the table from the vile banquet of an economic system that puts private profit before need, and that seeks to disguise avoidable world hunger as an accident of nature?


CAN YOU TRUST THE G8?
It is well-known that ‘democratic’ governments support arms sales to brutal regimes while private corporations step in to profit from the exploitation and repression. Spending on the Arms Trade increases and spending on social investment decreases.

It is also well-known that our planet is suffering from the almost irreversible effects of environmental destruction and yet Tony Blair, on his G8 website, says he wants to tackle climate change without “jeopardising economic prosperity” For Tony and his G8 cronies their personal “economic prosperity“ is more important than our environment.

FROM AFRICA TO IRAQ TO LONDON TO… THE UNIVERSE?
The G8 promulgate the myth that neo-liberalism is the only way for countries to ‘develop’ and this includes the creeping privatisation of public assets - our land, water supplies, hospitals and schools - here and abroad - nothing seems to be exempt.

Their insistence that the world’s problems are dealt with through crude market mechanisms means that public services everywhere will continue to be eroded and turned into their private profit making corporations. This will increase suffering and economic inequality and create… more poverty!

THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA
The mainstream media colludes with those in power by demonising and marginalising legitimate protesters. They fail to accurately report anything that challenges the official G8‘s world view. They present a distorted version of reality that serves only the interests of the political leaders, banks and big business. It’s a smokescreen to cover up what is really going on - governments, banks and big business corporations have been working together to systematically rob the poorer countries for years.
REPRESSION
There are increasingly repressive ‘anti-terrorist’ laws being used against legitimate protesters. Ordinary decent people with genuine concerns are being categorised by the police as a dangerous threat to society. But who poses the real danger?

Careerist politicians, Bankers and Big-business, ultimately pathetic individuals driven by personal greed and drunk on power, have forgotten the real value of life and nature. They behave like robots – they have become the real-life equivalent of the daleks – cold and ruthless in their relentless pursuit of global domination.

RESISTANCE
People everywhere are questioning and challenging the legitimacy of the corrupt and oppressive power structures that dominate their lives. All over the world there is growing opposition to what the G8 represents. Here in Britain, many ordinary people are deeply concerned that the G8 will merely seek to perpetuate their failing system under a veneer of empty rhetoric and media spin.

Previous G8 meetings in Prague and Genoa have seen hundreds of thousands of people out on the streets to express their legitimate concern over the global humanitarian and environmental crises. Many national and local grass-roots groups are planning how to peacefully express their total opposition to what the G8 represents

Everybody can do something – talk to your friends, your neighbours, tell them what’s happening. Show them this leaflet - sharing information is vital. Come to Scotland in July for the blockades, or organise an action in your local area.
