Dolphins and Coca Cola in Egypt

Dolphins need help and Coca Cola needs discouraging in Egypt

There are now 2 dolphin shows, sort of Abu Graib's for marine mammals, in the tourist resort of Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt and it looks like there could be more soon. Nobody here seems to give a shit and nor do any of the NGO's that I have told about them. What is particularly worrying I think is that if you want to see dolphins it is dead easy to go on a day trip on a boat from Sharm and see them in the wild in the Straits of Tiran.

The 2 shows are at:

Dolphinella, City Council Rd, Hadaba, Sharm el Sheikh

Concord Dolphinarium, Concorde el Salam Hotel, White Knights Beach, Sharm el Sheikh

"The Coca Cola company has long supported innovative efforts to keep the world clean and beautiful. Helping to keep the Red Sea bottom free of litter continues Coca Cola's environmental interventions that support communities around the world: recycling in Italy, planting a forest in Lebanon, awareness about marine resources in Saudi Arabia and educational centres in U.S. National Parks."

So writes Amr Ali, managing director of HEPCA, in the winter 05 issue of their glossy magazine called H2O. See www.H2O-redsea.com. Hepca have done a three year deal allowing Coca Cola to put their logo on tourist boat moorings in the egyptian Red Sea and to get their hands on local school kids. According to Amr Ali they have "targeted 300 school kids in Sharm and Hurghada."

If you want to let Amr Ali know what you think then the address is:

This land is, or was until the Biznizmeni stole it, Beduin land. Sharm el Sheikh was apparently so named because years ago there was a beduin sheikh who lived here who was famous for his hospitality. Local beduin now refer to it as Sharm el Kelb. Kelb means dog in arabic.
