London smashes through two million milestone

The number of people who have registered as official London 2012 supporters has passed two million.

The milestone comes as the London bid launched a new route for individuals to pledge their backing for the capital's campaign to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

A new telephone hotline has been set up by London 2012 Premier Partner to allow bid supporters to 'Back the Bid' with a simple phone call to 0870 870 2012.

Millions of supporters have already registered via the London 2012 website, by texting LONDON to 82012 and by signing petitions at events all over the United Kingdom.

London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe welcomed the news and said that public support had a key role to play in the bid campaign.

"This is a fantastic milestone to reach," he said. "It demonstrates the high level of support for our campaign and that it is growing all the time.

"As we go into the final stages of our campaign every single person can do their bit to help us win the bid by showing their support."

Last December, London 2012 announced plans to reach a target of one million registered supporters before the crucial vote to decide the 2012 Host City on 6 July.

But an overwhelming response from the public smashed through the one million barrier in just three months.

And support continues to flood in from all over the world. Supporters from more than 140 countries have registered with the London 2012 website.
