New Labour's shocking fake-grassroots: Dispatches tonight

Que Se Vayan Todos! | 23.05.2005 22:37

Dispatches on Channel 4 really rocked tonight. That was some PROPER undercover journalism that was.

Summary of the program.

This girl goes undercover in the NewLabour press office.

Fake letters.
Fake crowds.
Fake protesters (against the other parties).

There was one letter about the NHS which appeared in several local newspapers. The press office writes it, and then "real people" are asked to sign it and it's sent to various different local papers.

These tactics were imported from the US. The NewDemocrats and the Republicans got the idea from pharmaceutical corporations.

The strategy has been dubbed "astroturf" (ie fake grass-roots!).

Another thing was that MPs were given lists of answers to respond with when asked questions. That's VERY interesting. So, next time you watch question time and the labour mp (and probably the others too) sounds like a robot regurgitating some words a whip or a spin doctor has fed them... that probably is exactly what they are doing.

See you all Scotland.
