In his 2947 "Prelude To Space" Arthur C. Clarke presumed British dominance of interplanetary activity due to it's control of the Australian Outback spaceport.

The final give-away was the front page story in our local paper of aerial spy drones being tested above the South Australian outback. It was lifted verbatim from the U.K. Sunday Times, except for its omission of the name of the company conducting the experiments.
The company QinetiQ, the privatised Research and Development arm of the U.K. Ministry of Defence, is (according to its website) controlled by a 51% voting stock of the infamous Carlyle Group, also manufacters of the highly acclaimed Talon War Robot. It is reportedly about to launch itself on the FTSE in a billion-pound Murdoch advertised float intend to initiate a transcendance of "dot-com era" stock exchange activity.
While U.K. readers may be familiar with Halliburton/KBR's involvement in local defence contracts, including the importan "physical integrator" assignment in new aircraft carriers, involvement in Australian Defence contracts has been much quieter. The same KBR representative co-ordinated the construction of three capital-city Murdoch printing plants and then the bidding and construction of the Adelaide to Darwin Railway, while another set up Dick Cheney's Australian activities by globalising his endeavours into the creating of KBR's Asia Pacific Headquarters and Infrastructure Division Global Headquarters , located in a leafy Adelaide suburbs. In circumstances involving submitting a winning bid four hours after deadline (thereby with the possibility of having seen the other bids) a Halliburton-led consortium took control of Adelaide's water supply. The company has just completed the Environmental Impact Assessment for our proposed new naval precinct, and is the premier planning consulant at both State and Council levels.
In the meantime, Carlyle has just announced an Australian "scientific alliance" with BAE.
