Bradford Make Poverty History Demo

Rich | 14.05.2005 17:30

The Bradford Make Poverty History campaign is creating a ‘human wristband’ around Bradford Town Hall

On Monday 16th May (that’s this coming Monday), the Bradford Make Poverty History campaign is creating a ‘human wristband’ around Bradford Town Hall in Centenary Square. We need around 300-or-so people to all turn up wearing white t-shirts (that’s the important bit) at around 1pm. The local press should be there and hopefully it will send a powerful message to politicans that the British people want to see the end to world poverty. Similar events are happening around the country so if you’re not in Bradford you may find that somewhere closer to home is doing something like this.

Meet outside the J.B. Priestley Library at 12:30pm or Centenary Square at 1pm with your white t-shirt.

And will the politicians listen?

14.05.2005 23:31

Not in the least. Those with control are only too happy to see the poor die in their millions. This is demonstrated day to day They are interested in the decimation of the world population. It's no use to plead with the corporate fascists any more

Protesting is a bit like banging your head against a proverbial brick wall. The masses will always be subjigated by the elites, because too many people are living in blissful ignorance, and there are always too little people willing to protest at these things.

Oh well it will soon be over when we have World War III because the oil is running out and we need to fight for water. There is also that big doomsday asteroid that is due to hit us in 2035.

Sweet dreams everyone.

What do you suggest 300 people could realistically do?

15.05.2005 10:12

Yes, Rich did say "send a powerful message to politicians" and no, it won't.
However, what else could these 300 people realistically and be willing to do - taking into acount that they're not as "revolutionary" as some.
If you (dh and middle finger)are indeed on a higher level than these protesters, how have you got there. If you've never protested before you can't comment. If you have, it was probably an important experience in shaping your current (better?) ideas on tackling world poverty. And if you do have better ideas how about you share them.
One last point, about marketing. Before you try and sell (so to speak) anything, the usual thing to do is to consider how many people will that thing. If people interested in tackling poverty keep showing their faces, even if they ain't doing anything else, they're showing each other they aren't alone. And if there better ways of tackling this problem, it is worth trying because there are people who would listen.
Question:
So, instead of separating yourself from these ignorant misguided do-gooders, how about you go down and meet these people and turn them into well informed, tactically correct do-gooders.
Answer:
Oh yeah, its easier just to think everything is so fucked its not even worth trying.
Sweet dreams, ya morons

Make poverty history

15.05.2005 10:52

Make poverty History are a bunch of dodgy middle class NGO types, no?

You Wot!

All Middle Class People Are Evil!

15.05.2005 18:04

Yeah they're all dodgy NGO types. They want to the world a better place. But they're actually making it a worse place. Just by being alive. Fuck those middle class people. They should be shot. With their mortages and their dinner parties and their gay poofy accents. When the revolution comes we're going to torture them all. Round up all the middle classes, round up all the intellectuals. Hang them from every lamp post. Pol Pot - he had one or two good ideas!

And not only the NGOs but CHURCHES as well - Yes comrades, Make Poverty History has got a BIG Christian contingent. In fact, the biggest group in MPH is actually Christian Aid, the Christian Doo-goody NGO. Fuck those Christians.

And STUDENTS as well!!! AGHHH!!!!!

Not to mention Bono and all his other pretencious trendy celebrity mates pretending to have some sort of a "social conscience".

Some people might say that 300 people on their own aren't going to change much but they can achieve stuff AS PART OF A BIGGER MOVEMENT that will include about 100,000 people in Edinburgh, some of whom might even join in with G8Alt or Dissent!, at the summit itself. But those people are just WRONG.

And you know what, these are the same POSH WANKERS (and their grown up kids) who campaigned against Apartheid in South Africa. What was the point in that eh?

I'll tell you one thing. There is NO point whatsoever in changing international trade rules to stop them from discriminate against countries in the global south. No sodding point. The only thing worth fighting for is REVOLUTION ITSELF. Trade Justice? Drop The Debt? More and Better AID? BOLLOX!!!

I hate middle class people so much! I met one the other day. He said to me (in his RIDICULOUS accent) "us middle class people are damned if we do and damned if we don't! It's not fair - you guys hate us if we just try to make money and don't give a shit about inequality, and when we do try to campaign for a nicer fluffier world then you hate us even more", to which I replied YEP.

Then I hit him over the head with a frying pan.

Fuck Everything! (no point in trying...)

That last comment sums up everything that is wrong with the whole progress/anarchist/socialist/whatever movement.

i.e. - you can't do right for doing wrong.

Don't bring your crap onto others

16.05.2005 08:48

To all those who says this type of action is a waste of time , just let the people try new things out and see what happens. if it highlights the G8 summit and mobilises extra people to the demo ,then it is well worth it.

You can bet that middle finger is a burnt out ex- activist whinging old bore.

Just because middle finger ideas are bankrupt does,nt mean that other people ideas are.

red letter

Every little helps?

16.05.2005 11:17

I'm the one who posted it, and even I agree it's not going to do much. However I do feel it's important to support any NGO which is doing good, and it's really not difficult to go and stand around in a white t-shirt one lunch time.

Rich

we are too clever to do anything

16.05.2005 14:55

how much more satisfying to post smug little comments on a website sniping at anyone who tries to do anything, after all we are the elite and they are all stupid sheep

no-one knows I'm a revolutionary

"You can bet that middle finger is a burnt out ex- activist whinging old bore."

16.05.2005 22:58

And you'd be absolutely right.

Good night everyone.

Bono first

17.05.2005 14:09

Bono must be the first up against the wall. Sanctamonious cunt. He does actually believe that we should be 'realistic' and let the politicians 'sort out' Africa.

And Geldof the prick stood on a platform the other day and said that if the G8 leaders come and make some promises to alleviate the economics strangle hold of Africa they will be remembered as great men.

These are the arseholes that are doing the strangling but they'll be great men if they loosen their grip?

Fuck them, smash the physical assets of the rich and burn the banks do what you want and help free your brothers and sisters in Africa by destroying their oppressors. Starting with their celebrity lick-spittles. No negotiation.
