Cambridge Transport to G8 Protests

CAN | 01.05.2005 11:57 | G8 2005 | Cambridge

The G8 is meeting at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland this summer.

Our Glorious Leaders
Our Glorious Leaders

People who object to the G8's economic policies - which cause untold suffering to the poorest people in the world - and people who object to their wars - Iraq being only the most recent example - and those who fear that their constant drive for unsustainable 'growth' will lead to environmental devastation, will be travelling from all over the globe to voice their opposition to the eight men who are meeting once again to maintain their grip on power.

Cambridge Action Network is organising transport for local people who want to add their voices to this international opposition to the policies of Bush, Blair and co. We are expecting the cost to be between £50 and £60 but we hope to offer some subsidised places to those on low incomes.

We plan to leave on Friday 1st July and return on the following Saturday. Actions planned so far include the Make Poverty History march on the 2nd of July, a blockade of the Faslane nuclear submarine base, blockades of the G8 meetings and a day of action against climate change on the 8th of July. Accommodation will be available (mostly in the form of camping) throughout this period.

We hope to run a session in June to introduce some of the reasons we're protesting against the G8, offer direct action training to those who are interested, and give people an opportunity to meet others who are going to Scotland.

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that numbers of people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience"
