This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice Of Russia, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From NETHERLANDS-Italy and the US have been preparing a joint report on the fatal shooting of an Italian guard during a rescue operation in Iraq- the US cleared the soldiers of any wrong doing, and Italians are outraged. Most mayors in the Netherlands are in favor of legalizing cannabis in Holland and the EU. The Dutch parliament is debating this legalization and the divisions follow party and religious affiliations.
From RUSSIA- A commentary on how the US, with its strict drug laws, is leading the planet in the number of people in prison, 2.1 million, and the highest percentage of its population in the penal system. This week was the 19th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in Ukraine, which affected 9 million people and led to serious setbacks in the proliferation of new nuclear power plants.
From CHINA- Geo Bush has called for the construction of more nuclear power plants in the US. S Korea says it has not seen any signs that N Korea is preparing for any nuclear weapons testing. The US is dismissing Russia's proposal to have a middle east conference to end the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict. The Bush adminstration wants a new trade pact with 6 Latin American nations to eliminate tariffs on textiles.
From CUBA- In Nicaragua, mounting protests and violence have led the President to place the army and police on high alert. The US is considering a more confrontational approach against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. The US Congress has been informed of plans to sell 100 guided "bunker-busters" to Israel, which would work fine in a unilateral attack on Iran.
