Following the European day of action for migrant rights a meeting has been organised by the April 2nd Organising meeting at Halkevi, Stoke Newington to discuss future campaigns and the formation of an open network of activists

Open meeting

The 2nd of April 2005 was a European day of action against racism, for the freedom of movement, against deportation, against detention centres and for an alternative to the institutional racism contained in the European Constitution which accelerates the process of segregation and exploitation of migrants in Europe.

There were several initiatives throughout this country and a number of magnificent actions all around Europe.

In London there was a hastily organized march from Clerkenwell Green to Haggerston Park in Hackney. The March went past Communications house, the Government facility where asylum seekers have to sign on periodically; many of them not knowing whether they would come out the front entrance or be whisked away and deported to face the mercy of the regimes they thought they had escaped from. Imprisonment, torture and in some cases death were waiting for them.

Although the actual turnout on the day could have been better if circumstances had been more favourable, many organizations and individuals supported the initiative and the marchers were well received by the public along the route. This leads us to conclude that there is a necessity and the potential to build an ongoing campaign uniting people of various political persuasions.

To build the campaign there will be an open meeting at The Halkevi Kurdish and Turkish Centre, Stoke Newington Road, London N16 on Tuesday 26 April at 7.30. The meeting takes place in the middle of an election campaign that has been marked by the cynical scapegoating of asylum seekers for short term electoral advantage.

Please come along or send a representative to help get things moving.
