Ausralian Goverment Advice: "The Bougainville Provincial Administration has requested that Australians visiting Bougainville provide notice of their intention to visit, and contact the Administration on arrival in Bougainville ... stay away from the mountainous area in central Bougainville, around the old Panguna mine. Australians should not travel into this 'No Go Zone'.

"Foreigners who have entered the 'No Go Zone' on Bougainville without authorisation have been questioned by the Papua New Guinea authorities and had their passports confiscated on departure from the 'No Go Zone'. Australians should consider their travel plans carefully and discuss these with the High Commission before travelling."

"Bougainville has had an effective ceasefire in place since April 1998 following the nine year civil war, and is no longer closed to outsiders. Australians are advised to exercise a high degree of caution in Bougainville. "
