'Insitutionally Abused' Tenant asks the Indymedia Community for help.

Shaftesbury Housing - Failure in Microcosm

My name is James Reymond. I moved into a purpose built Shaftesbury Housing Bungalow in Essex having profound disabilities following a lengthy multi-agency collaborative process.

My home was not built properly from the outset. The damp course was underground, it was hazardous electrically and not to code.

Three years on, Essex County Council are attempting to protect me against Institutional Abuse by Shaftesbury Housing who have failed to repair and I am facing weeks in hospital as I have to leave so my home can be brought to up to code and made safe to live in.

I am asking the Indymedia Community for help/coverage. Any inside info re: Shaftesbury, its Regulators or tenants. Thanks chaps!!

Audit Commission Report on Shaftesbury Housing

03.05.2005 16:18

The Audit Commission in September 2003 published a rather scathing Report on the (lack of) performance of Shaftesbury Housing and its subsidiaries. This Report is well worth reading and can be downloaded in PDF form from Shaftesbury's own website.

Steve Stannard, former Labour Councillor in Hackney, who lives on the Kingsmead Estate was particularly critical of the RSL controlling his estate in a recent debate in Docklands organised by THATCH (Tower Hamlets Against Transfer of Housing)in which Lead Councillor for Housing David Edgar represented Tower Hamlets' Council.

A Film of this debate (made by award-winning German filmmaker Anja Kirschner) will shortly be available to the public.
