Tony Benn chairs crucial debate: Animal Experiments - Science or Fiction?

Oxford Town Hall, Thursday 21st April 7–9pm

With:
Professor Tipu Aziz, Neurosurgeon, Oxford University
Dr Simon Festing, Executive Director, RDS
Dr Jarrod Bailey, Science Director, Europeans for Medical Progress
Professor Claude Reiss, Science Consultant, Europeans for Medical Progress

Is animal experimentation essential for medical progress or a serious hazard to human health? This is the key question to be addressed in what promises to be a lively discussion. The importance of this issue for the future of medicine cannot be overstated. Come to this important debate and find out why.

Europeans for Medical Progress (formerly Europeans For Medical Advancement) is an independent, non-profit-making organisation of scientists and medical professionals. Our goal is to protect human health by modernising medical research. We support mainstream science-based medical research and patient care. We focus on rigorous scientific analysis of animal experimentation to assess the balance of help or harm to human health.

There is overwhelming evidence that animal experiments provide results that, when applied to humans, can prove misleading or fatal. These tests exhaust precious research funding, waste valuable time, produce ineffective solutions, and delay progress toward human cures.

Our family and friends deserve the best medical research – help us put patients before profits.

It is truly farcical to try and pretend, that human health is in a good way. When all scientific evidence points to the opposite. This evidence is of course, kept from public view. Instead we have the usual 'never had it so good' rhetoric.

I understand your passion and dislike for people that experiment on animals as I am heavily involved with the anti-vivisection movement but I think it would be brilliant if we could have a professional debate on the 21st of April. We need these people to come out and debate with us and see that we can have a discussion on animal experiments without resorting to shouting out from the audience. In my view, we are never going to win the "other side" over if we shout them down and abuse them every time they try and talk to us. Slowly slowly release a monkey is what I say and we need to show that we can be professional and polite if we want to achieve this.

I can understand your dislike of people that test on animals but we need to show "the other side" that we are capable of having an intelligent discussion without resorting to abuse and hatred. We welcome and love people who have the courage to back down from their original beliefs, such as Dr Jerry Vlasak, who used to vivisect animals. We want to be able to debate with people who support vivisection and show them that we are capable of this.
