British Trotskyism and Iraqs Ba'ath Party
Elvira Braun | 29.03.2005 13:26 | Social Struggles
An unspoken part of British history is that of the British Trotskyist Movement and its relationship with Iraq’s Ba’ath Party during the 1980’s.
For many Iraqis, the 1980’s was a time of great social struggle against the regime in Iraq but what many did not know was that some of the people who claimed to be allies, were infact providing information to Saddams regime, which ultimately cost the lives of thirteen Iraqi trade unionists.
In early 1980, the then leading British Trotskyist organisation, the Workers Revolutionary Party sent a delegation of British and American members over to Iraq, on the invitation and expense of president Saddam Hussain.
During the trip, leading party members met with officials from the Ba’ath Party to discuss a greater cooperation between the two organizations because many of the Trotskyist groups saw the regime in Iraq as being progressive and representing Arab Socialism.
Whilst enjoying their time in Iraq’s capitol, many people across the globe knew either little or had no information, that during this period the Iraqi regime was killing members of Iraqs’ democratic movement.
Letters that were sent to the then General Secretary of the Worker’s Revolutionary Party, Gerry Heally, show that some members expressed concern over the relationship that was being developed with Saddam Hussain.
Concern was first raised after a delegation from Iraq’s democratic trade union movement who visted the UK on a speaking tour, which exposed to British people the horrors of life under Saddams regime. The delegation had been organized by British Trade Unionists, who were involved with the main Iraqi opposition group of the day the Campaign Against Repression and for Democratic Rights in Iraq.
On the return to their country, the Iraqi Trade Unionists had found that their details had been handed over to the regime which resulted in their public executions. In the letters to Heally, members accuse the General Secretary of being the person who signed their death warrants.
The reason why this conclusion was drawn, was because some members of the WRP had found that firstly, substantial amounts of money had been deposited in the Party’s bank account by the Baghdad government. Secondly, members of the Totskyist organization had been involved with the organization and delegation which had been reported back to the Party’s leadership. This included infomation about the movements and where abouts of the Iraqi Trade Unionists.
Speaking to one active member of the Iraqi opposition of that time, she informed me that information about activists was getting back to the Iraqi Authorities which led to the harassment and murders of members families back in Iraq.
The letters to Gerry Heally, still remain in storage around the United Kingdom, they are being kept away from public attention because many fear that this would lead to a public out cry against many people, whom still remain active and prominent in the Left-wing movement to this day.

True but old news

The B'ath were following the standard Soviet training doctrine of financing groups which oppose their enemies. Witness in the 80's Stasi finance for the Greenham Women and right up until the fall of the old USSR a number of similar groups in Germany received money.
Rather like Cuba the British Left are happy to overlook human rights violations, repression of disent, lack of democracy as long as they perceive a "Socialist" agenda is being followed.

just the wrp then

the wrp was well known in the 80's for adopting some odd bedfellows. in particular, it hailed libya as a great model for socialism.
the majority of left groups, and in particular the swp and groups such as the socialist party (then militant) were amongst the most voiciferous critics of that regime, just as both parties are highly critical of cuba (the swp and in particular tony cliff were also very critical of the former ussr - coining the term 'state capitalism' to describe it).
just because the wrp supported libya, and because fight racism fight imperialism regards cuba as some bastion of socialism (and yes, george galloway of respect personally admires fidel castro, although this is not respect's line); this does not mean that it is an accusation you can aim at all, or even a majority of, trotskysist groups.
what is sure, is that the tories and some elements of labour gave all their backing to saddam in the 80's, while a few mp's, galloway among them, were unrelenting in their criticism of that regime.

However we are not a Trotskyist organisation. And have never supported the Ba'ath Party or Saddam Hussein. So quite what a reference to us is even doing in the discussion I don't know. But as mud sticks, thought it best to clarify!!!

There doesn't seem a lot of point. Your support for Cuba is undefensible. You should stop.
Freedom for Cuba
Why is this relevant?

Even if this is completely true, it's not fair to portray all "Trotskyists" or the entire "British Left" as friends of Saddam... I consider myself Socialist and am certainly not a Ba'ath sympathiser. Say what you want about the SWP/StWC/RESPECT but don't tar me and others like me with the same brush as those morons.

Heres a Fact: about the only people who were attacking Saddam Hussein's tyranny in the early 1980s were those on the left -- at the same time that the filthy British state under Thatcher was shipping as many arms as the Baathists could buy, including the British army's entire desert fighting kit, and while the Americans were shipping chem and bioweapons galore
And heres a filthy lie: that Stop the War was in anyway in sympathy with the Baathists, let alone receiving cash. The last time someone did that in public they ended up paying George Galloway a lot of money.
The British and American and Israeli intelligence services tried very hard to spread lies in 2003 that those who opposed the war -- including Galloway the lion, the courageous Chirac, innocent Kofi Annan (for which see his complete exoneration http://news.dcealumni.com/476/290305-latest-interim-report-cleared-mr-annan-of-wrongdoing -- were corrupted by Hussein's money
All these lies were shown to have no substance and were quickly dropped. It was the Zinoviev letter redivivus.

It was met by a ferocious fire coming from agents provocateurs, MEMRI, and the Berlin authorities. It had to change location several times, before a turkish community club finally offered shelter. Agent provocateur groups had denounced the conference to the local MI 5 state security branch as "planning a suicide bombing plot", promoting antisemitism, etc.
One technique of these agent provocateurs, is to come up with old stories like the above about the WRP.
These provocateurs claim! to be "Communist Cosmopolitan supporters of zionism" (there are definetely more comrades with a Jewish background in Trot groups than among these agents provocateurs!), or are often posing as antinazi-groups. They despise the working class. There social base is composed mostly of individuals of the aspiring middle class type.
Sometimes, the provocateurs technique resembles that of US provocateur group "protestwarrior.org", which has links to neocon thinktanks.
Quite often the provocateurs work in German state financed n.g.o´s. They put every effort into smearing the anti-war movement, the anti-golobalisation movement; and recently the protests against cuts in dole and welfare.
The provocateurs denounce the above mentioned campaigns as being either antisemitic ("criticism of capitalism leads to antisemitism") or as being pro-Saddam.
