Sainsburys Action Alert *3 - Sainsburys Family Charitable Trusts
Narwal Stimson | 21.03.2005 17:40
Third in a series of emails calling on people to take action against Sainsburys encouragement of GM foods.
Oxford Uni, GM Milk – meet the Sainsbury’s Family Charitable Trusts
Sainsburys Action Alert – Part 3
Please forward on.
The Sainbury family is still the single, most influential force in the supermarket that bears their name. There is no way to get away from the fact that the Minister for Science, Lord David Sainsbury and his numerous kin & in-laws have a strong say in the company.
Less well known is the mechanisms they use to exercise that power – there is some direct holding of shares, but a lot of it is tied up in the Sainsbury’s Family Charitable Trusts. These charities are basically a set of tax blags and fronts for the family. On the surface they are nice and friendly to the environment. For example, the Ashden Trust promotes the union of environmentalism and the performing arts.
Lots of hot air and little of real effectiveness. Not surprising that once you dig a little bit deeper you find strong links to Sainsbury’s GM interests intertwined with this lot.
For example, Prof John Gray, the Cambridge plant geneticist, a director of a company holding Lord Sainsburys’ GM patents, is a director of some of the trusts.
The money for the activities of the Sainsbury’s Family Charitable Trusts comes from the family’s large shareholdings, in particular in Sainsburys itself, where Lord Sainsburys own pet fund, the Gatsby Trust, owns a whopping 5% of the supermarket.
So as well as being shareholders in Sainsburys, the Sainsbury’s Family Charitable Trusts are also connected to GM itself. And if that was not bad enough, the Gatsby and Linbury trusts are also massive donors to Oxford University – with grants running to the hundreds of thousands pounds. And guess what, the Gatsby Trust gives money to no less than the plant sciences dept at Oxford University…. Mmmh.
So, whether you are opposed to the building of the new Oxford animal laboratory (for more info see www.speakcampaigns.org.uk) or opposed to GM contaminated milk in Sainsburys, or just against GM poisoning our food chain in general, then it is time that this link in the chain was held up to be accountable.
Please get ringing, faxing, emailing and writing your disgust at the activities of the Sainburys Trust, and ask them to stop funding research in to genetically modified plants, to put pressure on Sainsburys PLC to get milk from GM fed cattle of their shelves and to stop funding Oxford University as long as it insists on carrying on in barbaric 19th century science. Be firm but polite, and start doing it now – time to keep up the pressure.
