Samba surveillance on Saturday

Coppers targeting the samba band on Saturday have been spotted before ...

The first picture here shows a pair of uniformed coppers who relentlessly trailed two anti-fascists right across London on the tube for several hours on one occasion in 2004 (taking copious notes about everything they said and did, all the way) -- a short blonde woman (officer ZT 553) and a tall, beaky-nosed man (officer ZT 558?).

The same pair were spotted on the anti-war demonstration in Central London yesterday (Saturday 19 March 2005). They appeared to be closely monitoring the samba band, reporting into their radios, chatting up band members in Trafalgar Square and taking notes.

They can be seen in two photographs on the Indymedia thread about the samba band's performance yesterday (see second and third photos here). The beaky-nosed copper's face can be clearly seen just behind Mark Thomas of TV fame. The samba thread is here:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/03/307059.html

Their police numbers indicate that they are based in Sutton, south west London:

"Sutton Police can be identified by the two-letter code ZT on their shoulders."

Does anyone else have any photos of these two coppers from yesterday (or other occasions)? Did anyone speak to them, hear what they were saying on their radios or see what they were writing in their notebooks? Contact Pigwatch and let us know ... but, please, don't have nightmares!

The policeman looks like he's got mark thomas under surveillance there! Or is just realising who it is. Funny picture! Serious subject though.

can i have your autograph?

When I saw the top picture, I immediately recongised the two police officers from Yesterday and furthermore, I at least recognise the woman officer from previous protests, though I'd have job putting a finger on whichever they were. Possibly not real coppers at all? Do we have any activists in Sutton who can keep an eye out? Obviously we have no way of knowing whether these are indeed government spies, or whether they are really just abnormally zealous coppers who think they are better employees for doing this stuff. (I think I know where I saw her yesterday, wasn't Trafalgar Sq. but was near the band I expect due to the proximity of the noise).

sheffield samba followed

this is the pair... They followed sheffield rhythms of resistance to their coach after the demo. When questioned they said they were "protecting" us. Cheers. They had a nice little chat with our coach driver too and made lots of notes.

ahhhhhh... one of those coppers is known from well back. She was at the Bush Senior demos last year as he was on his fundraising visit.
Also was monitoring the Beyond ESF bloc on the ESF march...
i always presumed they worked with the FIT team... they have a habit of pointing out individuals to the SO3 photographers.

specialist coppers

It is not unsual for a couple of coppers from a force to be given duties monitoring protestors; they then have a habit of turning up at all sorts of demos to spot people the know and who they are talking to. In animal rights this is really common, with police travelling from Sussex to Yorkshire at times

For example in Lancashire it is DS Marc Nasser & DC Davidson

Staffordshie - PC Rushton

Oxfordshire PCs R Braithwaite & A. Trahearne

Dont get too paranoid - judging by their inept performances, these coppers are often the runts of the force who dont realise that they've actually got the bum job cos for all their claims about breaking the AR movement, etc, they never get very far.
