Tomorrow (Wed. 16 March), at the Ambassador Hotel in East Jerusalem, an international delegation of lawyers and public figures will meet and call on the Israeli government to “Cancel the Restrictions, Let Vanunu Go Free”.

Participants in the conference include Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Jennifer Harbury, expert in international law and Director of the STOP Torture Campaign, Fredrik Heffermehl, vice president of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Weapons, and Knesset Member Issam Makhoul from the Hadash party. Mordechai Vanunu will join the speakers.

Publicity for the meeting states that, “Nearly one month before the review of the restrictions that were imposed against Mordechai Vanunu upon his release from prison in April 2004, which prohibit him from contacting foreign nationals, leaving Israel or changing his place of residence without permission from security authorities, a delegation of lawyers and public figures from the U.S.A. and Europe has arrived in Israel, intending to address the Knesset Constitution, Law and Judiciary Committee and to call for Mordechai Vanunu's freedom. The Knesset Committee has evaded its responsibility to discuss the grave situation, in which a citizen is penalized for a second time, after completing the full sentence imposed by the Court, by means of State of Emergency Regulations dating from the British Mandate.”

The delegation will address the violations of international law resulting from the restrictions imposed on Vanunu and will discuss the nuclear arms race in the Middle East and around the world.
