85 Year old to embark on 72 hour hunger strike

Ritchie Twist | 05.03.2005 15:44 | Animal Liberation | Oxford

On 14th July last year, Joan Court went on a 48-hour hunger strike outside the site of the proposed animal research laboratory in South Parks Rd. This year she is going a step further and during World Week for Laboratory Animals is to embark on a 72-hour fast, starting at 1pm on Wednesday 20th April and ending at 1pm on Saturday 23rd April.

The fast is intended as a message to the Government and Oxford University as well as any contractor preparing to continue with the laboratory build that the determination of the SPEAK campaign and the rest of the animal rights movement to prevent the South Parks Rd development remains undiluted, despite the restrictions forced on us by the recent draconian measures to permanently silence our voices of protest.

Joan's courage and determination to continue fighting regardless should be an inspiration to all of us; she will be 86 years old this year, and has fought for the rights of both humans and non-humans alike throughout her life. The hunger strike she is undertaking will be much harder this year, given its duration, its very public nature (it will take place in a prominent Oxford site) and the vagaries of spring weather. The purpose of her action is twofold - most importantly to continue keeping up very public pressure against Oxford University and its plans for new vivisection 'headquarters'. However, Joan is aware more than most that no campaign can be run on a wing and a prayer, and is hoping that her hunger strike will help raise much-needed funds for SPEAK to continue its vital campaign.

Please show your support for Joan. This will be a difficult time for her, so why not e-mail us or write her a letter with messages of encouragement and we will forward them; knowing she is in your thoughts will help her to see the fast through to its conclusion.

YOU can play an active part in supporting Joan's hunger strike by helping raise much-needed funds; in doing so, you will be fighting alongside Joan and the SPEAK campaign and most importantly joining us in saving animals' lives. Download the sponsor form and get as many signatures as possible.

N.B. You will be able to follow regular updates on Joan's progress during her hunger strike. An in-depth interview with Joan will also be posted on the website at the end of March.

The truth is bad enough

"Please contact them politely and ask them to withdraw any future funding until the University stops promoting scientific fraud and cruelty and starts practising real science instead."

All animal medical research is not "scientific fraud". Sometimes it actually is relevant to humans. It's all reprehensible, and it all should stop, but overblown and inaccurate language like that doesn't get us anywhere, except written off as fanatics.
