Plan: no transplants for Muslims

-- | 05.03.2005 12:03

Liberal health-care ban directed primarily at Muslims but may affect Christian groups.

The health ministry in the Netherlands has proposed excluding Muslims from receiving organ transplants. There is a permanent shortage of donor organs, and the health minister specifically blamed Muslims, who refuse removal of organs on religious grounds. The plan is a tit-for-tat retaliation: Muslims will get lowest priority to receive transplants. Since there is such a shortage, in practice they will never get one.

The health minister is from the Liberal party. The proposal illustrates the deteriorating social climate, with bitter hostility between Dutch and Muslims. However, it could also affect smaller Protestant churches, whose members refuse to donate blood and organs.
