Lobby of Birmingham MPs to protest against anti-terrorism laws.

The Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign, in support of the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC), is organising a lobby of Birmingham MPs in their constituencies on Saturday 5 March 05. We will ask our MPs

1 not to vote for the renewal or extension of anti-terror laws, especially the powers of internment;

2 to oppose current proposed anti-terror legislation;

3 to affirm that there should be no detention without trial, and no acceptance of evidence obtained through torture;

4 to call for the release of the foreign nationals currently detained without trial three months after the Law Lords ruled their detention illegal;

5 to urge the government to work for the release of British residents currently detained in Guantanamo Bay.

The Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign is alarmed that most Birmingham MPs, especially Khalid Mahmood and Roger Godsiff who represent constituencies with large Muslim populations, have supported the anti-terrorism bill currently going through parliament – a bill that, according to Home Office Minister Hazel Blears, will be used to target Muslim communities. Members of the Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign, Muslim communities and residents of Birmingham will be asking our elected representatives to oppose the passage of this bill through parliament.
We oppose the use of the ‘war on terror’ to erode our civil liberties and agree with Law Lord Hoffman when he stated on 18 December 2004 that:

“The real threat to the life of the nation, in the sense of a people living in accordance with its traditional laws and political values, comes not from terrorism but from laws such as these.”
