DerbyM17 G8 environment Ministers meeting 17th-18th March

DissOne | 27.02.2005 17:24 | G8 2005 | Ecology | London | Sheffield

Details of protests for the G8 environment ministers March 17th-18th March Derby M17.

This July, the G8 - the heads of state of the world's most powerful countries - will be meeting in Gleneagles, Scotland. Whilst they talk of tackling climate change, our government is imposing a huge new roads building program, and almost comprehensive airport expansions. Whilst they talk of relieving poverty in the global south, they uphold a financial system that creates global famine, military repression and social and environmental breakdown.

In preparation G8 Environment and Development ministers will meet at the Breadsall Priory Hotel, near Derby, hosted by Margaret Beckett, UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Why should these people be allowed to meet without opposition? We intend to be there. Bring costumes, music, whistles etc and join us!

Appeal from Derbyshire police

10.03.2005 15:42

Derbyshire Constabulary is appealing for protestors planning to demonstrate in connection with the G8 environment summit to get in contact.

The force is offering this opportunity to protestors to open a channel of communication in an effort to facilitate lawful peaceful protest ahead of the event at Marriott Breadsall Priory on March 17th 2005.

We are asking people to contact us with details of how and where they would like to protest, routes they may wish to take if cycling/marching so we can attempt to accommodate a safe and peaceful protest.

Anyone who would like to contact Derbyshire police with such details is asked to ring 0845 123 33 33.

Marches in Deby Banned for M17

16.03.2005 12:26

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/03/306681.html

Approval has been given by the Home Secretary to ban all marches through Derby city centre ahead of tomorrows planned G8 protests there, coninciding with the G8 Environment and Development Ministers meeting. The ban was reportedly requested by the Police and local councillors in Derbyshire.

Under the Public order Act 1986 marches through Derby city centre are banned. There is also a ban on trespassary assemblies in the parishes of Long Eaton, Breadsall and Morley.

A protest will be allowed in the city’s Market Place, but under the banning order is not permitted to move from that position.

You are just thugs and hooligans

17.03.2005 11:42

All you so called anti-capitalist protesters are just thugs and hooligans out to cause a ruck with the police and to smash and loot shops! Every single so called anti-capitalist protest from Seatle to Genoa has ended in mass riots, destruction and looting! You are no better than football hooligans. No wonder the home secretary has decided to ban anti-G8 marches through Derby. The vast majority of the public totally disagree with you as well as all you are fighting for is the right to cause trouble!

Aren't these the good guys?

17.03.2005 13:41

Why "oppose" the environment and development ministers? Yes, yes, I know any number of global corporations would love to oppose them, and abolish their posts if they could, but I mean, why should concerned citizens oppose them? Aren't these the people who are trying to do what they can to promote laudable aims, albeit within the constraints of their governments' overall policies? Shouldn't people be demonstrating to *support* environmental action and development?
