Explorer Will Steger stuns audience with climate change evidence, blames CO2 emi

Minnesota explorer Will Steger told an audience of senators and congressmen at the state capitol on Monday that policymakers need to be more informed about climate change.

Steger blamed CO2 emissions from coal and oil for causing alarming rates of increase in atmospheric CO2 and global temperatures.

Steger said that global climate change is more than an environmental imperative; it's an "issue of morality for our children's sake and their children's sake".

Steger expressed great concern about purging glaciers in western Greenland, and the amount of open water showing up in the Arctic.

Steger showed film from his journey by dog sled across the Antarctic Larsen Ice Shelf, ice shelf now gone.

Steger showed satellite images of the recent disintegration of the Larsen Ice Shelf, a 300-mile long shelf comparable in length to the state of Minnesota

Steger concluded with "more than anything else we need leadership" ... "global climate change could very easily go out of control".

I have a few other notes that I took at Steger's Feb 21, 2005 presentation to Minnesota politicians and law makers.

Steger began his presentation with a brief life history, crediting his father for allowing him to become what he is.

Steger lives in a log cabin, heats with wood and halls in his own water with buckets from the lake. He said Minnesotans should make their own wind and solar generators instead of having them shipped in from Europe.

Steger didn't mention nuclear power or aviation. Perhaps neither would be necessary by his conserving way of living.

Steger is already a hero for the environment. I expect that he will do more, as opportunities arise.
