Halal Meat - it must be stopped

Halal meat must be stopped - now!

I feel physically sick, because i have just watched the most horrible scene, i have just seen a documentry about halal slaughtered meat. It brought me to tears to see these poor animals bleeding to death while the slaughter man joked with his assistant,up until now i always thought that meat for human consumption was produced humanley, but this is plainly not true. OK, as a vegetarian it is probabley nothing to do with me, but that would be the easy way out.
To say that the ritual slaughter of these animals is humane is to deny gods' creatures rights and dignity in death.
We should ALL write to our MP's, the RSPCA and all animal rights protection organisations, and campaign to have this vile, evil, barbaric, and cruel practice stopped immediatley!

vile, evil, barbaric, and cruel practice

while we're on the subject, everyone should read Eric Schlosser's book 'Fast Food Nation', especially the chapter on his visit to a cattle slaughterhouse in the US. guarantee every sentence will leave you appalled. a great piece of documentary. here's an example:

"For eight and a half hours, a worker called a 'sticker' does nothing but stand in a river of blood, being drenched in blood, slitting the neck of a steer every ten seconds or so, severing its cartoid artery. He uses a long knife and must hit exactly the right spot to kill the animal humanely. He hits the spot again and again. We walk up a slippery metal stairway, and reach a small platform, where the production line begins. A man turns and smiles at me. He wears safety goggles and a hardhat. His face is splattered with grey matter and blood. He is the 'knocker', the man who welcomes cattle to the building. Cattle walk down a narrow shute and pause in front of him, blocked by a gate, and then he shoots them in the head with a captive bolt stunner - a compressed air gun attached to the ceiling by a long hose - which fires a steel bolt that knocks the cattle unconscious. For eight and a half hours he just shoots. As I stand there, he misses a few times and he shoots the same animal twice.

I watch the knocker knock cattle for a couple of minutes. The animals are powerful and imposing one moment and then gone in an instant, suspended from a rail, ready for carving. A steer slips from its chain, falls to the ground, and gets its head caught in a conveyor belt. The production line stops as the workers struggle to free the steer, stunned but alive, from the machinery. I've seen enough."

Meat... cruel.... sky.... blue!!!

Eating meat means something must be killed. Never a nice thing to see if you are anti. I am troubled by your contribution. ALL abbatiors are horrid and nasty. I worked in a 'proper' abbatoir years ago and it was very grim.

Your thoughtless and knee jerk condemnation of halal meat makes it appear that you have been convinced by the racist agenda of this program. Calm down, have a piece of carrot cake, relax, reflect.

BTW, I would say that a cut to the carotid is no worse than a bolt in the head.

It could be any slaughterhouse

Why do you imagine the horrors of slaughter are at all limited to halal practice?

People going on about halal slaughter, as if it were something special, provides the perfect shield for the far bigger mainstream industry. The worst features of slaughter are common to both. This covers how the animals are treated from arrival to their killing.

A Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) report of June 2003 makes very mild recommendations to improve practice at slaughterhouses. Only a handful relate specifically to halal. The report, read between the lines, reveals the reality of the slaughter experience under whatever regime.

FAWC is a government animal welfare advisory organisation.

If you saw some distressing pictures consider it might have been ANY slaughterhouse - you don't think mainstream slaughter workers are humourless surely? Don't indulge the fantasy that there is humane killing. Don't let the industry hide behind racism to protect their profitability.

Promote veganism!

halal

I think the original poster is confusing halal meat (i.e. contains no blood, and is not the flesh of a carnivore or omnivore) with ritual slaughter festivals where animals suffer a very distressing death at the hands of untrained people with the wrong tools for the job.

Just because some meat is compliant with halal rules doesn't mean it's any more or less cruel than the bog-standard stuff on sale in the supermarkets.

By all means complain about ritual slaughter-fests, but don't get it confused with production of foods which meet people's religeous requirements. Racism thrives on that kind of confusion.

Plus, unless I'm very much mistaken, it's perfectly possible to be veggie or vegan and still comply with Islamic laws. And it would be a much nicer world if everyone stopped eating animals.
