Mark Barnsley Will Not Be Speaking At Weatherbombin'

Mark Barnsley | 16.02.2005 00:22 | London

I won't be speaking because I don't know where it is!

A few weeks ago I was asked to speak in London by a friend of a friend. I agreed, and asked that details of the event be sent to me by e-mail. They weren’t. I sent a number of texts and e-mails, to which I didn’t get a response, before phoning the friend who’d given my number out. Obviously I had concerns about the organisation of the event, about the apparent lack of publicity, and about being messed about.

After eventually receiving an e-mail, I raised my concerns, and after being told I had nothing to worry about, asked to be informed of the location of the squatted venue last Friday, when the first events started. Somewhat obviously, I need this so that I can actually get to the event to speak, but also so I can help advertise it, arrange to meet up with friends, and arrange accommodation and my travel scheduale. Not only have I not received the location of ‘Weatherbombin’, where I’m supposed to speak tomorrow, but I can’t find it out. There’s no mention of the event on Indymedia, and the group’s own website still doesn’t give the location. After more unanswered e-mails, in desperation, I again telephoned the friend who had put ‘Weatherbombin’ in touch with me, but he can’t get hold of them either.

Bearing the above in mind, I am not prepared to come to London, a considerable journey for me, on the basis that I may be able to find out the venue after I arrive. Bearing in mind I was assured I could go ahead and buy a train ticket, and the phonecalls I have had to make, the invitation to speak at ‘Weatherbombin’ has already cost me nearly £40, the amount I have to live on each week at the moment, but I’ll just have to put that down to experience. My apologies to anyone who had expected to hear me speak.

Well, I might have been, but having looked at the website, I can't work out where it would be either. 'South London' is not that helpful. Yeah, it is at a squatted address, I guess, but presumably that address must have been squatted since at least last week, and everyone involved, and the cops will know where you are. But the speaker doesn't, and nor do potential audience members not in your immediate periphery. Even if the address IS on the phone number (I haven't rung it, following the last comments) there doesn't seem to be any reason for not putting it on the website.

Never mind. Truck on.

How Was I Supposed to Know Where It Was?

16.02.2005 19:35

How was I supposed to know where it was? The location isn’t posted on Indymedia or on the Weatherbombin’ website itself. The contact I had has had 3 different phone numbers in as many weeks, and is apparently unable to check his e-mail. I did everything I could to find out the location. But why the fuck should I have had to? Don’t you think it was the responsibility of the people who invited me to let me know??!!

Why Don't You Just Put The Location On Your Site?

16.02.2005 19:40

The places been open for a fucking year! Why don't you just put up the location on your website? It says on there 'to be announced on the day' - which day is that then, christmas day?!

Are the other speakers telepathic?

Or did they just get a bit more courtesy?

Or perhaps they're just your mates, and have less far to go.

Shame

Late notice?

16.02.2005 20:17

I "cancelled" the day before because I left it as late as I possibly could in the hope that somebody at Weatherbombin would either let me know the location, or they would publicise it. I find it absolutely incredible that that didn't happen, was I just expected to wander round South London looking for the place?

I posted to Indymedia to try to avoid inconveniencing people who had heard that I had been speaking, not my responsibility really, but nobody from Weatherbombin did it after hearing from me. I note that the Weatherbombin site has STILL not been updated to remove me as a speaker, the location STILL hasn't been given, and the phone number is WRONG. If anybody has tried e-mailing I hope they had more luck than I did.

When I agreed to speak it was on the basis that the event was properly advertised. I wasn't just coming down to entertain a closed circle of pals.
