Why was the army in Rotherham? Why wasn't it on the news?

Kath Holliday | 04.02.2005 13:44 | Anti-militarism | Ecology | Repression | Sheffield

Just wondering why the army was here. If you know, then please mail me.

Thursday 3rd February was strange because after working a night shift, I was woken at 2pm by a very large helicopter with 2 whirly things outside and sirens. When my kids came in from Wingfield school they said that there had been soldiers and a large helicopter on the field round the corner. My bloke came in and said his uncle went out this morning and only got a few yards in his car before 2 police cars with men sat on top with machine guns stopped him and asked his business. Then my sons friend came by and said his dad said someone had been storming Wentworth House!! and they called the army in!?! Wentworth House has been taken over by an American who plans to turn it into a hotel. There was a bit of hearsay that he was going to turn the whole area into a theme park, yuk.
The land of the Wentworth estate borders on the land in my website.  http://www.holisticfraternity.co.uk
There's an air shaft on Keppel's field. Some people have seen wierd things in the woods around here.
Nothing on Calendar news or Look North! Anyone offering sanity welcome ~ head done for now.

Were Rotherham United playing?

Seriously though, were there any other witnesses to this? Has anyone suggested what was happening and why? Sounds like a scene from Grand Theft Auto.

Explanation given by Rotherham Advertiser Fri Feb 11th

11.02.2005 16:39

The Rotherham Advertiser published that Sgt John Hickey flew 200 miles from a base at Odiham, Basingstoke in the 25 million chinook helicopter to visit his neice at Redscope Junior school, Rotherham. He said "It took a bit of planning".
This is a joke, how much would it cost to do this? And what about the other helicopters and armed men?

yes it's true. the helecopter landed in the school's grounds and the kids all had a great
time. my niece said the only thing that was wrong, was the smell, i think she ment the fuel, because of the smell she said she was not joining the army. typical 6 year old.
