In an election that failed to excite, Palestinians dutifully elected the man that Israel and its funder want. 69 year old Mahmoud Abbas is said to have won 70% of the vote, with a turn out of 65% after the polls were kept open for longer.

Even as some of the voters wiped the third lot of indelible ink of their fingers, Silvan Shalom the Israeli Foreign Minister was issuing orders to the new President of Palestine.

"By breakfast time tomorrow I want all terrorism brought to an end, and an end to corruption in the PNA he said"

(Sharon has just been outed as Israels richest PM ever .....)

Meanwhile, Xinhau.net, the Chinese news service which is pretty hot on Rafah issues, reports that Israel chose today to announce (yet again) that it intends to dig a trench along the border between the divided town of Rafah Gaza and Rafah Egypt.

" Israel Radio reported that a group of contractors will participate in a closed-door discussion on bidding for digging the trench, which will go for 4.5 kilometers long and 10 meters deep. "

No doubt thats just an insurance policy in case their newly elected man is unable to deliver the israeli goods, No Jerusalem, 40% of the West Bank, and no right of return.

Haartez reports that the elections went smoothly and that Senator Joseph R. Biden, A Democrat from Delaware noted that:

"This could be an election back in the States so far," he said.

Yeah right - I bet those US checkpoints are a real bitch on election day....
