Zapatista Art

For obvious reasons of security it is strictly forbidden to photograph the people at the Zapatista Caracol of Oventic. However visitors are permitted to capture the breathtaking murals which adorn pretty much every building in the village. The locals seem very proud of their artwork which requires no explanation as it largely speaks for itself. Below is a small selection. Enjoy.

oventic is only a few kilometres from the town of san christobal de las casas, a toursit hell hotpot, ironically, partly "thanks" to the zapatistas.

all you have to do to take pictures, like a zapaturista, of people, is ask for permission in the junta de buen govierno, or to people themselves. if they dont feel like it, they will say no and move away. if they don't mind but rather the authorities, or the pro governement neighbours not know they are zapatistas, they will put the balaclavas on if it is cold and they are carrying it on themselves. you can't film inside the cafe, and inside other buildings, but during the 1st of january celebrations, there are plenty of zapaturistas and press running around taking pictures and videos of everything and everyone. hence thousands of children, women and men, wear balaclavas, looking pretty.

zapatismo at home.
