Oxfam raps rich nations over aid
How much longer do we tolerate mass murder | 06.12.2004 21:04
Like in Kabul, where there is class division between fat aid workers and the locals.?Is this a growing trend? Compare this letter to Oxfam and Oxfam's media announcement. What is to be done?
Oxfam wants wealthy countries to double what they give in aid
Rich nations need to do much more to overcome global poverty, the aid agency Oxfam says in a report.
"Dear Caroline
I was disappointed recently to see a recruitment advertisement, here in the UK, for an Oxfam Country Director for Ethiopia. The advert pointed out that Oxfam has been working in Ethiopia since 1974 and the advertised salary would have been quite good for someone based in London!
My experiences suggest that almost every single INGO with an office in Africa does not have a local African person as the head of that office. Too often white expats are sent out to be the Head of the Office, receiving excessive salaries with comprehensive benefits. Opportunities for Africans to become Directors are few and far between.
I have no idea how many local employees Oxfam has in the position of Country Director, but I am sure that after 29 years of working in Ethiopia it might have been possible to find a local Ethiopian person to be your Country Director.
I believe that the practice of sending expatriates overseas and paying them inappropriate salaries is patronising to local people and I wish that INGOs would start ensuring that local jobs are done by local people earning local salaries.

Interesting comparison. Is this another form of colonialism? How do aid and neoliberalism work together? Discuss ( in heated debate ).
