What an excellent result for George Galloway and the anti war movement.Well done George! And how appropriate that he used the occasion to demand that Blair answer for his war crimes. Ifor
I heard a report that he was awarded £150,000 damages. Can anyone confirm that this is the amount that he supposedly claimed he required per year 'as a leading member of the British labour movement' (and did the judge take this into account)?
To George I can only say: "Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability."
As anyone with an understanding of the libel laws will know George was very, very lucky.
The Torygraph legal team had no option but to adopt the Robinson defence of due dilligence because of the difficulties with the background of the documents. In usual circumstances the defence would have been "truth is no libel". The DT journo DID find the documents in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the documents WERE Iraqi, however because the DT lawyer was unable to call anybody from the Iraqi regime to provide the legal technicality of confirming this they were not admissable. As a result of this George did not have to prove his income (way beyond MP salary) or account for payments to his bank account.
The DT have appealed and all they need is one member of the B'ath Party deemed responsible by a Court to confirm the providence of the documents and a very different result is likely. It was no wonder senior Torygraph executives looked so relaxed outside Court yesterday, they know this is not over.
The documents were admissible, and George is a Journalist and TV celeb, so his income would be far higher than his as MP's salary. The victory was so complete and unequivical luck didn't play a part.
He has sacrificed his MP's seat for his priciples, and risked bankruptcy with the Libel. I dont agree with a lot of his politics, or his self-proclaimed leadership role but he has stuck to his principles, has been consistant over iraq, stood up against the corrupt establishment, and put his money where his gop his many times.
Galloway has announced he'll be standing at the next election against Blairite butt-licker Oona King, at Bethnal Green, so his libel award against the TelAvivagraph will come in handy.
But what's this nonsense from Sarah, who says -
"The DT journo DID find the documents in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the documents WERE Iraqi,"
Oh, really? Like the documents "found" (ahem) by the Christian Science Monitor and the Daily Mail. They were fakes, weren't they, and Galloway sued the CSM for publishing them, and he won. The Mail realised they'd been sold fakes and so didn't publish.
No doubt they were all churned out by the Ahmad Chalabi and Iyad Allawi document factories, just like the garbage about weapons of mass distraction.
